Microsoft announced Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition at Gamescom Opening Night Live and announced the release date. With a chic trailer for the new strategy edition, the makers got strategy fans in the mood for October 15, 2020. A blog post on the Xbox official website provided additional information.
Since the release of Age of Empires 2 in the Definitive Edition in November 2019, the developers of World's Edge have made little public statement. Accordingly, there was hardly any official information about the planned Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition so far. There were only a few reports about the start and progress of the beta at the beginning of the year. As part of the Gamescom Opening Night Live, Microsoft has finally put the strategy game in the limelight. At the two-hour show with host Geoff Keighley, the creators showed a trailer and announced the release date. The starting shot for the conquest of the new world will be given on October 15, 2020.
The developers also published some additional information about the remaster in an article on the official Xbox blog. Accordingly, the Definitive Edition of Age of Empires 3 will offer newly built 3D models, support resolutions up to 4K and ensure better usability with a modernized user interface. The soundtrack and audio effects have also been revised. In multiplayer mode, there will be crossplay between Steam and the Microsoft Store again. Of course, all known content from the original will be included, but the developers have also come up with some new additions. So there will be two new game modes and two new civilizations.
For example, the popular "Art of War" challenges come back from the predecessor, in which players are given special tasks, each designed around specific gameplay aspects. There will also be a number of historical battles from the Age of Empires 3 era for you to re-enact. The two new civilizations are the Swedes and the Incas.
When revising the individual races, the developers also paid particular attention to the Native Americans. They realized that the representation of the "Native American" cultures in Age 3 were not exactly authentic. So they worked directly with advisers from the tribes to adequately portray their culture, history and people. More information on the resulting changes to the indigenous civilizations will be available at a later date.
If you already have the original Age of Empires 3 in the Complete Collection on Steam, you will receive a discount of 25 percent when pre-ordering the Definitive Edition and pay 14.99 euros for the new edition. The same applies to owners of the Definitive Edition of Age of Empires and Age of Empires 2. There is also a 25 percent discount on pre-orders in the Windows Store if you are a subscriber to Xbox Game Pass for PC or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. In addition to the individual purchase, Microsoft is now also offering the so-called Age of Empires: Definitive Collection, which includes all three parts at a price of around 45 euros. All three parts are also part of the Xbox Game Pass for PC (AoE3 from release on October 15).
