All the contents of the new Darkmoon Madness expansion

Wow, the Hearthstone announcements are tough. In addition to the new expansion "Dark Moon Madness", which draws players to the Dark Moon Fair, a brand new game mode called Duels has been announced, which owners of the pre-sale bundle can play from this evening (October 22, 2020). Almost even more important for the future of Blizzard's online trading card game is the overhaul of the old-fashioned quest system and the introduction of a true achievement and progression system.

Hearthstone: Darkmoon Madness – Old God fairground fun

The next Hearthstone expansion "Darkmoon Madness" sends players to the Darkmoon Fair, which WoW players should already be familiar with. Typical for a fair, you can visit rides here, pass the time with mini games and stuff your stomach with sugary delicacies. But with all the fun you get an uncomfortable feeling, because the dark moon fair is surrounded by dark forces and you could swear that a disgusting tentacle scurried past in one corner or the other.

Hearthstone: Darkmoon Madness – The Return of the Old Gods

The Old Gods C'Thun, Yogg-Saron, Y'Shaarj and N'Zoth return as new legendary cards. They shine in new splendor with new effects and even more tentacles, but they still bring their iconic effects in the form of artifacts. Artifacts are spells for certain classes, which, for example, trigger the random spells of Yogg-Saron. The artifacts are not yet known when typing these lines.

With the new game mechanics, you upgrade cards in your hand by first playing cards that cost more mana than the Doom card. For example, if we have a servant with doom for 5 mana and play a 6 mana card or higher, the servant receives + 4 / + 4. This is just one of the different corruption effects servants exhibit. The corruption effect can only be triggered once per creature. Our servant, buffed with + 4 / + 4, does not become stronger by + 4 / + 4 if we then play a card with seven mana or higher.

Simultaneously with the new Darkmoon Madness expansion, Hearthstone (buy now € 0.00 ) a new game mode implemented. The so-called Duels basically combine the arena and dungeon runs, and create a new mode from it. As in the arena, you create a basic structure from cards, choose one of the special hero skills and refine it with the treasures from dungeon runs. Instead of against bosses, you compete against real players and refine your deck after a game with three other cards suggested by the game.

Just like in the arena, your run ends with a maximum of twelve wins or a maximum of three defeats. Duels are free and playable from October 22nd if you have pre-purchased Darkmoon Madness. All others can officially play duels from November 12th.

Instead of letting one of three randomly proposed cards wander into your deck as in arena mode, you create your own deck of 15 cards at the beginning of the game. The catch: You really need to have these cards in your collection and your choice is limited to the Academy Scholomance, The Curse of Naxxramas, One Night in Karazhan expansions, as well as the Basic and Classic Set. These expansions are available to you in season 1 of the duel mode, in the following seasons the expansions will be shuffled as in the arena.

The developers have already indicated that cards from the wild mode will be used later, but some special cards with too strong effects should be banned (possibly Alexstrasza or similar). If you want to let off steam in duel mode, you should use your wild cards so maybe not disenchant it after all. Deck codes work, by the way, despite the small number of cards. So if you are uninspired, you can quickly put together your deck online.

In the first season you can choose from ten different heroes (see below) and their unique hero skills. The more you play with these heroes, the more hero skills you unlock. Season 1 is all about mages and gives you access to many magic classes.

Hearthstone Duels: Heroic Mode and Ranking System

At the same time as the start of Duel Season 1 on November 17th you have the option to enter the heroic mode. Access to heroic duels costs 150 gold or € 1.99, but in contrast to the free mode, there are also really good prizes. The rewards are based on the arena mode. So if you get twelve wins without losing three times, you hit the jackpot. Anyone who wants to get at least their gold for access must have at least six wins.

Since you can expand your deck with every victory in duel mode and your hero gets additional life points, the opponent assignment must of course be considered more closely than in the arena. Especially when there is little going on (for example at night), it can therefore take some time before an opponent is assigned to you. According to the developers, the fact that you meet an opponent with more wins and thus a significantly better starting position should almost never happen. Similar to the battlefield mode, you will be assigned a hidden MMR. Before the start of the early access it was not yet clear whether a visible MMR would also show your skills.

Hearthstone's old-fashioned interface and quest system have had their day. With the upcoming updates, players will finally get a real profile page, can track their successes in the game and see which rewards they can earn outside of standard and wild mode.

Hearthstone Progression Revamp: Achievements

Instead of (if at all) researching via external sources which successes you can achieve in Hearthstone, this will soon be displayed in the game itself. The success window shows you how far you have progressed in your card collection, which milestones you have achieved in Ranked Mode, battlefields, card chaos or via solo adventures, and which achievements you can achieve at all, for example to bag more gold.

With each new expansion, players get the opportunity to join one 50-level reward track to shimmy along. You gain experience through all activities in the game: quests, achievements or simply playing in any mode. The rewards for leveling up include card packs, gold, and cosmetic rewards. According to the developers, casuals and frequent gamers alike should get their money's worth.

Those who are particularly hardworking and reach level 50 switch ten new hero skins free. In addition to the rewards mentioned, you have the opportunity to unlock your Tavern Pass via the Reward Track, with which, for example, your selection of heroes in battlefield mode is upgraded from two to four. You even have the option to level above level 50. Every further level after level 50 rewards you with 150 gold! If you purchase Darkmoon Madness in advance, you will unlock further interesting reward options on your way up to level 50.

Hearthstone Progression Revamp: revision of the quests

Quests now reward you with experience for the Reward Track. In addition to the usual daily quests, you have the option of three per week weekly quests (Refresh is always on Mondays at 9:00 a.m.). Just like with the daily quests, you have the option of canceling one weekly quest per day and rerolling it if you don't like the task.

Special legendary quests will no longer overwrite daily quests in the future. If you still have legendary quests open, you should complete them by November 12th. From then on, the changes to the Progression Revamp will be implemented at the latest.
