A long time ago: The first official announcement of the new giant Amazon project for the massively successful franchise “The Lord of the Rings” was made in November 2017. According to estimates, Amazon gave a whopping 250 million US dollars for the rights to the Tolkien universe out. However, it is not yet known when the series will appear on Amazon Prime. Originally it was said that a publication was planned for the end of 2021, but whether this is possible due to the corona pandemic and the many restrictions in everyday production can be seriously doubted given the enormous effort. But it should finally be ready by 2022 at the latest!
Now there is new information about the series, which underlines the claim and the high expectations of Amazon: With a total of $ 465 million The “Lord of the Rings” series grabs the crown for the most expensive series in the world. For comparison: The previous top runner “Game of Thrones”, the serial adaptation of the fantasy bestseller by author George RR Martin, is worth around 100 million US dollars per season. For the grand finale, which was published in 2019 and has been widely criticized for the eighth season, about 15 million US dollars per episode was spent – with a total of six episodes, that’s a good deal “cheaper” than the planned Amazon series. Stuart Nash, New Zealand’s Minister for Economic Development and Tourism confirmed: “This will be the greatest television series ever made”. A total of five seasons are planned to be filmed in New Zealand. There are also plans for a possible spin-off for the series.
The plot of the Amazon series in a nutshell
An official recap from Amazon states:
“The upcoming series from Amazon Studios brings for the first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth history. The epic drama takes place thousands of years before the events of JRR Tolkien’s” The Hobbit “and” The Lord of the Rings ” and takes viewers to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to fame and fell into ruin, unlikely heroes were put to the test, hope hung by a thread and the greatest villain ever sprung from Tolkien’s pen The series begins in a time of relative peace and follows an ensemble of familiar and new characters who face the long-feared reappearance of evil in Middle-earth, from the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains the majestic forests of the elven capital Lindon up to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor are di ese kingdoms and characters left a legacy that will live on long after they die. “
This confirms the suspicions of some fans: The series focuses on the downfall of Númenor. There should also be a reunion with well-known characters. In addition to Galadriel, the mistress of Lothlórien (played by actress Cate Blanchett in the Peter Jackson films), we can probably look forward to another appearance by Elrond, the master of Rivendell. However, if you look forward to seeing the well-known cast again, you will be disappointed. For example, Galadriel is not portrayed by Blanchett but by Welsh actress Morfydd Clark. Unfortunately, there is no further cast information at the moment.
But that’s not all there is to report about The Lord of the Rings: According to other rumors, like Game of Thrones, the series is set to be quite slippery. In addition, there are some exciting reports in the game cosmos: Amazon Game Studios was planning an ambitious MMORPG, based in the world of Frodo & Co., but the development was surprisingly scrapped. In addition, the Hamburg game developer Daedalic is working on a stealth adventure based on the iconic character Gollum. Feel free to take a look at the embedded video. We also recommend our preview of the game.
Eight to ten episodes are planned for the first season. There is currently no official release date. As soon as there is new information, we will report on it.
