We had to wait a long time for new information about the Amazon series The Lord of the Rings. While we roughly know what era the series' plot takes place in, we didn't know which protagonist exactly will be at the center of the big story. The long puzzles are now a thing of the past. Because recently Amazon published the first, longer summary of the story that awaits us in the "Lord of the Rings" series. The authors summarize the plot as follows (via PC Games):
"The upcoming series from Amazon Studios brings for the first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth history. The epic drama takes place thousands of years before the events of JRR Tolkien's" The Hobbit "and" The Lord of the Rings " and takes viewers to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to fame and fell into ruin, unlikely heroes were put to the test, hope hung by a thread and the greatest villain ever sprung from Tolkien's pen The series begins in a time of relative peace and follows an ensemble of familiar and new characters who face the long-feared reappearance of evil in Middle-earth, from the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains the majestic forests of the elven capital Lindon to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor these kingdoms and characters leave a legacy that will live on long after they die. "
We have known for a long time that the "Lord of the Rings" series will take place in the Second Age. What was unclear so far, however: What is the core of the story that the authors want to tell in the series? After all, the Second Age is just as eventful as the first before and the third after. Now it is official. The mystical island kingdom of Númenor is at the center of the story! The human kingdom of Númenor can be found on the large map of Middle-earth in the southwest. The island of Númenor was originally located exactly between Middle-earth and Valinor, the realm of the divine Valar in the west.
The mystical realm of Númenor
The half-elf Elros, the twin brother of Elrond, once founded the noble Númenor family that lived on the island between the worlds. Countless myths and legends surround this island, the history of which is strongly reminiscent of the myth of Atlantis. The series should be about the rise and fall of Númenor and the fate of famous heroes and villains such as Elrond, Galadriel and Sauron. What is clear is that in the series we not only learn more about the kings of Númenor, but also about the elves of Lindor and other human kingdoms from the mainland.
The rise of Sauron
However, the story about Sauron and his influence on the kings of Númenor will be particularly exciting. In contrast to the Third Age, Sauron had a beautiful Elven or human form in previous ages. However, he was not only beautiful, but also charismatic. When Sauron came to Númenor as a prisoner, the villain was devastated. But through his eloquence and persuasiveness he was able to win the hearts of the nobles and kings, who over time turned away from the Valar and their allies in Middle-earth. This dark age is said to have other horrors such as human sacrifice for the dark Valar Melkor (aka Morgoth), but whether these gruesome crimes will be an issue in the series remains a secret for the time being.
The pilot double episode has already been shot!
The "Lord of the Rings" series begins with a double episode which, according to Amazon, has already been shot. The schedule for the filming of the remaining episodes is in place and they should start shortly. At least five seasons with eight to ten episodes each are planned. When Amazon will air the series is not yet known. We are definitely just as excited about the start of the series as we are about the new Lord of the Rings MMORPG, which is expected to open its doors for the Open Beta in 2022.
