Apex Legends: starts the sixth season with major innovations – Gamesaktuell

The free2play shooter and Battle Royale hit Apex Legends only started in May of this year into the fifth season, which has brought the title the greatest successes since its launch. The fact that a new Respawn Entertainment location has opened in Vancouver in spite of the global pandemic was worth it, because the new content created in this way came and is being popular. The numbers for loyalty, new players and weekly hours of active play broke records.

Although the development of a new Apex Legends character takes over a year, we can already look forward to a new hero six months after Loba's introduction in Season 5, more precisely: a heroine.

Ramya Parekh, a British-Indian weapon modder, enters the circle of legends under her pseudonym Rampart and brings her very own backstory with her in the well-known Apex manner. Neither as a mercenary nor as a veteran soldier, she finds her way into the game. At the age of 21, Rampart is instead a shop owner – specializing in the construction and modification of weapons. She understands herself and her craft less as an engineer than as an artist. When Rampart's shop is attacked, she proves her shooting skills and is only barely defeated by her adversaries, who then burn down her shop. No less a person than Kuban Blisk then presented her with a personal invitation to the Apex Games. Blisk, already known from the Titanfall series, is the alleged founder of these competitions.

Rampart is a simple shopkeeper who never really intended to get involved in the Apex games. But when her shop is burned down by a group of gangsters, she seizes the first opportunity to rise from the ashes.

Despite a certain Hit it up mentality Rampart is a very defensive character who supports intense positional play. Her tactic skill is to build up static cover inspired by the V-Wall from Titanfall 2. With a metal base and a semi-permeable force field on top, the wall protects against any projectiles falling and reinforces the bullets of the defending shooter. With three skill charges, Rampart can supply the whole squad and, paired with other defender legends like Wattson, pose a dangerous threat in the closing ring. With her ultimate ability, Rampart set up a fixed cannon, more specifically her personal light machine gun named Sheila. With an infinite supply of ammunition but a long reload time, it poses a deadly threat that can be used by both friends and foes. In total, Rampart can set up three guns at the same time, but she has to wait for the cooldown each time. The passive ability of the new heroine is not to be despised either. As a weapons expert, she gets a bonus on all light machine guns in the game. In addition to her ultimate ability, Sheila, this also applies to the Spitfire, L-Star and Devotion weapons. Not only does it have 15 percent more bullets in the magazine, but also reload times are 25 percent shorter with this type of weapon.

Nevertheless, the developers do not consider Rampart to be "overpowered". Your wall takes a few seconds to set up and can be destroyed with a single shot during this time. The wall can also be seen from a great distance, so that one can hardly be surprised by Rampart's abilities. The rather long cooldown of her Ulti and the limitation of her passive ability to LMGs should also help to keep Rampart defeatable.

We can look forward to a new weapon for the new season. As usual in Apex, the new piece is borrowed from the Titanfall universe and represents a submachine gun that is supposed to deal a lot of damage, especially at close range. Instead, the R-99 disappears as a weapon that can be looted from the ground and only appears in care packages, the devotion rotates naturally in the normal loot pool again and there will probably be a turbocharger again. Much will also change on the armaments front. So every player starts immediately with Evo armor and you can secure an advantage right from the start through high damage dealt. Furthermore, you can also find higher level shields, which will then also be Evo shields and can be leveled even further. You can also still find golden shields, which, as usual, have advantages and disadvantages compared to red Evo armor.

There will not be a completely new location, but numerous changes will find their way into the game on the "Edge of the World" map. The notorious company Hammond Robotics has moved in there and has built a launch site including a rocket – which unfortunately cannot be shot – and interrupted train traffic. So you can now find immobile train wagons lying next to the tracks and use them as cover. New locations have appeared, as well as additional paths through the many rocks. In some places there are also control panels with which you can drive metal walls out of the ground and permanently block a path. For teams with Octane or Pathfinder, however, such blocks are optional. In addition to other major changes to the drilling site, the main changes are the loot that you will find on the map.

Hammond Robotics has been a well-known advice player in Respawn Entertainment's game universe since Titanfall. Now they are setting up an entire rocket launch pad on the newest 'Edge of the World' map.

With the sixth season comes the biggest innovation in Apex since the release of the Battle Royale title. In addition to the new character and weapon, Respawn Entertainment is introducing a crafting system. In practice this means that as a player you will find materials all over the map with which you can build weapons, attachments and even shield improvements on a kind of workbench. The equipment that can be tinkered with on the so-called replicators changes constantly and rotates daily to weekly. The respective buildable items cannot be found as normal loot for this. However, there can be no dispute about the materials. Each player receives their own materials that neither take up space in the inventory nor can be retrieved from death boxes. If you die and re-enter the game, you keep the materials you have already collected and can immediately make new equipment. The goal Respawn Entertainment is striving for with the new system is to shift the gaming meta. So not only aggressive players should be rewarded, who get the best loot from other players' death boxes and have a big advantage in the final fight. The combination of the new character Rampart with a defensive focus and the new craft system rewards particularly careful play behavior and brings a breath of fresh air into the game.

The first season with background stories says goodbye and leaves a positive impression on the players. So positive that there will be even more stories about the playable legends in the future – from now on in a comic guise. PvE quests like the treasure hunts, however, do not make it into the new season. The treasure chests that can still be found in the game unlock the comics without any further effort. Although the stories should focus on the well-known heroes of the Apex games, the story cliffhanger from season five will also come to an end, according to the developer. However, Respawn is still silent about the announced and mysterious Olympus.

When Apex Legends (buy now for € 18.09) It is not yet known to be playable on the Nintendo Switch, but it is known that it will come. How the title will perform in handheld mode remains to be seen and will mainly be in the wake of Crossplay relevant. This should primarily be supported between console players. If you want to compete in the arena with a PC player despite the console version, you have to deal with the more precise control of your opponents on the PC server. Of course we can look forward to many events in the new season, a new special game mode that is still in the test phase and of course another season pass with new cosmetic equipment.

The season's motto no longer has anything to do with ancient treasures, but this time it has a more modern touch.

A brave step, hopefully in the right direction

May the best shooter win? Fortunately, this has never been the case in Apex. If you position yourself cleverly and sometimes run away instead of always looking for confrontation, you can go very far. With this strategy you can only find a good loot with a lot of luck. But the idea of supporting a calm and defensive style of play only sounds fantastic until more aggressive players are at a disadvantage. This will hardly be the case in a battle royale, but the crafting system in combination with a new, very defensive character could very well mean too blatant a cut in the meta, which not all players will approve. The decision to continue to include more lore in the game will make all players' hearts beat faster. The growing number of funny, personable and approachable legends provides a good basis for creating a Battle Royale universe that consists of more than looting, building towers and dancing.
