As part of E3 2021, Ubisoft has Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora the game based on the James Cameron film revealed. It is the first Ubisoft title to be released for PS5, Xbox Series X / S and PC and thus exclusively serves next-gen hardware. In a new video, the team has now talked about the technology behind the project. Ubisoft relies on the in-house Snowdrop engine, which was also used in The Division 1 and 2.

Especially for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, the studio had to provide the Snowdrop engine with an extensive upgrade in order to meet their own requirements for the game. The developers explain, among other things, that Snowdrop was recently mainly used to build virtual cities – the world and nature of Pandora presented the team with new challenges. The result can be seen, however, as the E3 trailer of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora shows.

Thanks to the possibilities of the next-gen consoles, Ubisoft has a lot of freedom without having to worry too much about hardware limits. Ray tracing and other effects are supposed to push the game to the limits of photorealism. Ubisoft is currently planning to release Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora in 2022. In addition to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X / S, the title will also be available via cloud streaming on Google Stadia and Amazon Luna. Next year, Avatar 2 will also be released in theaters on December 14, 2022.
