Game developers like to promise nothing when they announce their games. Even with the unveiling of Battlefield 2042, we couldn’t roll our eyes any more when one of the great multiplayer modes was touted as a “declaration of love to the fans”. Now we’ve finally seen this ominous mode and we have to admit, this really is a declaration of love and an apology to fans for the series’ missteps over the past few years!

This is the Battlefield Portal

Battlefield 2042 wants to get the shooter series back on track this year and focuses on what it has always been: multiplayer battles! That’s why you jump into three major modes, one of which is the “declaration of love” mentioned. This was revealed during EA Play 2021 and we can describe it with a clear request: Build your own Battlefield!

The mode of Battlefield 2042 called the Battlefield Portal (buy now 59,99 € ) is basically a huge Battlefield kit. You put together your very own game modes in an editor. You don’t have to limit yourself to Battlefield 2042. Battlefield Portal gives you access to three other eras of the series: Battlefield 1942, Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3. In the pool of the respective epochs, weapons, vehicles, maps, classes and factions from yesteryear await, all of which are state-of-the-art today . In Portal there are three mini remasters in one.

EA Studio Ripple Effect has built a user interface for the editor that you can call up in your browser on your PC or smartphone. There you click everything together comfortably. It starts very simply with the selection of the game mode. Rush, Conquest or do you want to build your own game mode right away? Then you choose the maps on which everything will play out. You have the choice between all 2042 maps, but also selected maps from earlier.

“El Alamein” and “Battle of the Bulge” come from Battlefield 1942, Bad Company 2 contributes “Arica Harbor” and “Valparaiso” and “Caspian Border” and “Noshar Canals” return from Battlefield 3. All maps are created in the latest Frostbyte engine. So there will also be destruction, which back in 1942 one only dreamed of. The new weather effects, such as the hurricane, are also included, at least if you want to, because from here it goes into the depths. According to the cards you choose eras and factions. If you wish, you can have the soldiers of World War II compete against the specialists from Battlefield 2042. However, there are no mixed teams from several eras.

Now come the weapons, vehicles, gadgets and weapon attachments. Here you determine exactly which team gets which equipment. Knife only? No problem! Shotgun against sniper? Why not! No sighting devices and only rear sight and front sight? All right! The game settings follow after equipment and factions. Here you can assemble your own modes in detail if you wish. The hardcore group in particular gets their money’s worth, because, among other things, you decide whether there is friendly fire or 3D spotting and the minimap is activated.

Routine in der Subroutine

Even more absurd things can be set, like the speed at which you can run or an asymmetrical match of one against a hundred. But there is still a long way to go, because if you want, you end up on the so-called logic editor after all the menu settings.

This board not only looks like programming code, it is also basically simplified programming language. There, all the settings made so far appear as routines and subroutines, and hobbyists in particular can fine-tune to their hearts’ content and down to the smallest detail. The commands all work according to the “If this, than that” model, if one thing happens, you automatically trigger another. As an example, EA shows an auto deal routine in which you will be cured to 100 percent if you get a kill.

Once you have completed your desired game mode, you either keep it for yourself and your friends or make it available to everyone. The creators of the game mode then have admin rights on the servers on which their mode is played.

Maximum freedom for the players

When asked by the creative director, we were told that they had already experimented extensively and built modes. For example an “Infection” mode, where a player changes to the opposing team when he dies until there is only one left on the other side. We are sure that the community will let off steam with relish.

Since this massive freedom in the setting options naturally makes balancing difficult, the developers at Ripple Effect tell us that, pragmatically, they simply don’t balance it at all and leave it to the players. Where you don’t stand a chance against modern war machines with the weapons from World War II, you simply give the underprivileged team a buff. But the players themselves are in demand.

That brings us to our worries, which EA was not able to fully dispel in the interview. With such freedom it will be even more difficult to recognize cheaters. DICE assures us that they are aware of this and that they are working hard on a solution. However, we are not yet told how this will be dealt with.

The community can also be a problem, because even without owning the game, anyone can use the kit. You only have to buy Battlefield 2042 if you want to play it yourself. So there is a good chance that the Battlefield Portal will be flooded by trolls posting empty or clumsy modes online. The experiences should be moderated by DICE and the players, but such community masses are difficult to control, especially at release.

Nevertheless, Battlefield Portal is an extremely extensive construction kit that also functions as a partial remaster of old parts and will certainly make many fans happy. The mode is to be expanded in the future. But you don’t want to commit yourself yet and first see what the players will do after the release. There is still a lot to be done before then. Our presentation was a pre-alpha version. Nevertheless, the Battlefield Portal should be available in time for the release of Battlefield 2042 on October 22, 2021.
