Those responsible at NCSoft have announced that the online role-playing game Blade & Soul will be upgraded to Unreal Engine 4 in summer 2021. The developers promise not only a visual upgrade, but also improvements for performance and loading times.
Blade & Soul was released in Europe in January 2016. The truth is, the Korean Free2Play MMORPG has a few more years under its belt. The game celebrated its launch back home in 2012. It is therefore not surprising that the martial arts fun looks pretty dusty from today's perspective.
However, that is exactly what is set to change this year. On the official website of the game, those responsible at NCSoft write:
"It's official! We'll be Blade & Soul upgrade with Unreal Engine 4. "
The upgrade should take place in the summer. The developers promise not only a visual upgrade, but also improvements for performance and loading times. The user data and accounts are not affected by the upgrade.
New content for Blade & Soul will also come this year: a new character class, a third specialization for the classes already available, fresh dungeon challenges and a game system that has not been presented in detail before.
The author of these lines had Blade & Soul tested at the time and have fun with the Free2Play MMORPG:
"Many players will not like Blade & Soul, that much is clear. The anime look with the big eyes and deep cutouts is a matter of taste, the level phase is very linear and solo-heavy and the craft has little to offer MMO professionals. I still had my fun in the 70 hours of play so far, because the combat system has become so incredibly good. Countering, dodging and spectacularly lining up combo chains is just fun and comes into its own, especially in PvP. With the wuxia setting NCSoft hits the mark for me anyway. "
