It wasn't long ago that Chris Roberts, the head of Cloud Imperium Games, defended himself Dream project Star Citizen before the criticism of some supporters. The ambitious space MMO is not a castle in the air, so Roberts, but a project that is supposed to offer the most captivating massively multiplayer first-person sandpit universe. It takes a correspondingly long time to develop Star Citizen.

But what about the Squadron 42 single player mode, which is independent of Star Citizen (buy now ) should appear? In the original Kickstarter campaign, the release was planned for 2014. Since then we have repeatedly reported on postponements – most recently in September 2019 when it was clear that the beta won't start in the second quarter of 2020 after all. We now know that the new date in the third quarter of 2020 was not met either. And thanks to the new roadmap, which does not require a fixed date promise, the supporters and interested parties are of course now wondering when there will be a specific update on Squadron 42.

In the course of a question and answer session a few days ago, Chris Roberts commented on this in the forum. The best answer the chief developer can give to this question is: Squadron 42 is ready when it is done, and it is not released early just to meet a deadline, although the technology and content have not yet been finalized , everything is fine-tuned and plays great. Roberts doesn't want to compromise on this project. There is still a long way to go to beta and everyone on the team is working to do something great with Squadron 42.

At the same time, we shouldn't expect any too detailed updates on the progress of the development of Squadron 42 in the new roadmap. Roberts explains that delivering these updates without revealing too much about the story and the gameplay can be tricky. He also points out that other great games such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Last of Us 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 were also much longer in development than initially communicated. That is quite normal in game development, especially when you are overseeing an extremely ambitious and high-quality project.
