As early as 2018, director Ron Howard announced that he would like to shoot a sequel to the 1988 fantasy film Willow. Now it is clear: there is a series about Disney +
In the film, the Nelwyn (dwarf) Willow set out to bring a foundling of the Daikini (humans) back to their land. But the sinister Queen Bavmorda wanted to find the child Elora Danan so that she could be sacrificed. Because, according to a prophecy, Elora would bring about the end of the queen's reign. Willow was chosen as the protector of the child and together with the warrior Madmartigan and the sorceress Raziel he managed to defeat Bavmorda.
Willow: Series planned for Disney +
Willow: Apparently a sequel to the fantasy classic is planned
The series should now tell how the story continues. The actor Warwick Davis returns to his role as Willow. The first episode was already written by Jonathan Kasdan (Solo: A Star Wars Story). Disney hired Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich) as a director. The show is meant to introduce new characters, so it won't be all about Willow. We may see an adult Elora Danan.
It is not clear to what extent actor Val Kilmer, who played the warrior Madmartigan in the 1988 film, can be present. The actor fell ill with cancer some time ago, but appears again and again in some films.
"So many fans have asked me over the years if Willow is going to return, and now I'm excited to tell them he actually does," said Warwick Davis. "Many have told me that they grew up with Willow and that the film has influenced their view of heroism in our own world. If Willow Ufgood can represent the heroic potential in all of us, then he is a character I have great honor may pick up again. "
Ron Howard said, "It's creatively exciting to not only revisit the world and characters George Lucas, Bob Dolman and I first came up with, but to see them come up in such fresh, entertaining and cinematic ways." Way through the imagination of Jon Kasdan and the team at Willow. This is not a nostalgic look back, but a creative push forward, and a joy to be a part of all of this. "
It is not yet known when filming for the Willow series will start and when we will see the first season. The ongoing corona pandemic could mean that production is slow to progress.
The Willow series is the first project after Star Wars in which Disney dares to work on another work by George Lucas – Indiana Jones 5 is currently on hold.
