Due to a bug in the PlayStation Store, owners of the Control: Digital Deluxe Edition had the chance to access the new Ultimate Edition of the title for a short time. A little later, however, this function was removed again. Only buyers of the Ultimate Edition with identical content will receive a next-gen upgrade from Control.
The Control: Ultimate Edition has been available for PC, PS4 and Xbox One for a few days. However, when it was announced, the new version of the Remedy title caused frustration among many fans. If you want a free upgrade for PS5, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S, you have to buy the new Ultimate Edition. In addition to the main game, this package also contains the two expansions of the title.
A bug in the PlayStation Store has made the controversy about the missing upgrade even worse. For a short period of time, owners of the Digital Deluxe Edition of Control could automatically download the new Ultimate Edition. A little later, however, this function was deleted again after the error was noticed. Now these players also have to pay for the Ultimate Edition – even though they already have the same content as the Digital Deluxe Edition. An upgrade would theoretically be possible – Publisher 505 Games just doesn't allow it.
So 505 Games is choosing a different upgrade strategy than we have seen from other studios so far. While most titles receive a free next-gen upgrade, other games only pay a small surcharge. Publisher 505 Games commented on the decision in a statement a few weeks ago. That there is another way was recently shown by CD Projekt Red, who announced a free upgrade for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – no matter which version of the now five-year-old title you own. 505 Games has not yet commented on the bug.
