In the grand finals of the League of Legends World Championship 2020, which started at the end of September, the Korean team DAMWON competed against the Chinese competition from Suning. The tension could not be denied, because for years China and Korea have been among the strongest regions when it comes to the professional leagues in League of Legends.

The first game of the best-of-five format won DAMWON, but Suning was able to equalize immediately afterwards. After that, the Koreans couldn't be stopped. DAMWON has clearly won the following two games and thus also bagged a decent stake of the prize money.

How much exactly that will be is not yet certain at the moment – at least 2.5 million dollars (about 2.15 million euros). This sum can still increase, however, as Riot Games is adding a portion of the profits from in-game sales of the skins developed for the championship winning team. Because League of Legends (buy now ) belongs to the biggest e-sports titles ever, the whole thing should add up to a pretty respectable amount.

Although Korean players are generally considered to be very strong in the League of Legends scene, DAMWON is the first world champion from the Korean professional league LCK since 2017. At that time, the Samsung Galaxy team won the final against the Korean competition from SK T1 . Last year, the FunPlus Phoenix (FPX) team from China took the crown, but Korea is now back on top for the time being.
