Paramount Pictures wants to venture back into fantasy realms and is currently preparing a new movie about Dungeons & Dragons.

D&D returns to the cinema

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are currently working on the script and will also direct. The film is not due to hit theaters until March 27, 2022, but negotiations with possible actors are already taking place. One of them is Chris Pine (Captain Kirk from the new Star Trek films). He could take on the role of the main character. Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) was previously planned for this, but he is apparently no longer on board.

The story of the film is to revolve around a warrior and his group of mythical creatures, who go in search of a fantastic treasure. That sounds pretty bland. The film project has been in the works for years and should have nothing to do with the other D&D films. The first flick hit theaters in 2000. This featured Thora Birch and Jeremy Irons, among others. The film did not meet the taste of D&D fans. Even regular moviegoers were more likely to be put off by the CGI dragons and the "plastic wands". One can only hope whether the new film places more value on the typical D&D atmosphere and also offers better effects.

Fans of D&D would certainly like to know which of the fantasy worlds of the pen & paper role-playing game the new film is set in. But that is not yet known. A strip in the Forgotten Realms, in which we would also meet well-known heroes like the Drow Drizzt Do'Urden, would certainly be interesting.
