After AoE 1, the second part of the series also got a powerful facelift. But is it worth buying a 20 year old game?
That's right – the LAN classic par excellence has 20 winters under its belt. Is it still worth buying? I say: Yes, definitely! – At least if you like medieval real-time strategy.
I have to admit that I discovered Age of Empires 2 relatively late for me. I spent a lot more time with the third part of the heron. But that's not what it's about: Age of Empires 2 is here since November 14, 2019 as a definitive edition! In contrast to the HD version of the game from 2013, not only the graphics were screwed here.
What's new in the Definitive Edition?
First of all, I noticed a small but crucial feature: The fields of the mills are now automatically sown again! That alone makes the game a lot more pleasant. Furthermore, when playing the campaign it is noticeable that all speaker roles are filled. I like that very much, because the setting in the older versions was sometimes horrible. Otherwise you get:
- Zoom levels for the camera, which makes the battlefield much clearer.
- three more campaigns, four new races and a few new unit types.
- an improved and stronger enemy AI.
- new Tutorials and multiplayer challenge maps.
The graphics are not incredibly breathtaking today, but they still retain the old Age of Empires 2 charm. That doesn't mean that it looks very dated, on the contrary: the maximum was teased out of the actually outdated graphics engine. This has one advantage: The computing power required is limited. In addition to the HD textures, there are also some other innovations. building are now shown in more detail and already to recognize during construction also there is now a switchable grid, with which you have a better view of the battlefield and can organize it better.
So grab some friends and throw yourself into battle!
If you're looking for more multiplayer games, here are some must-haves:
For whom is the new version of AoE 2 worth playing?
Age of Empires 2 in the Definitive Edition is definitive one of the best strategy games, I've ever played. Most of the corners and edges from the original version were ironed out, the campaign is still as much fun as it was then and the graphics look very good within the possibilities.
So the game is good for both newcomers, for as well long-established fans the series. For moderate 20 euros (or in the Xbox gamepass) you get a sophisticated real-time strategy game with a great campaign, many different races and a wonderful soundtrack. You should also keep an eye on the cheats, as the most bizarre things can be conjured up here. Age of Empires 2 has received a worthy revision with the Definitive Edition, with which one can pass the time up to Age of Empires 4 extensively.
Unfortunately, the hardcore fans still have to tear away a tear. For now, the Definitive Edition of AoE 2 is coming without LAN mode out. The multiplayer mode is initially completely online. It has not yet been announced whether a LAN function will be submitted with an update. But we can remain confident.
