Gamers have waited years for Cyberpunk 2077 to be finished, but there are problems especially on PS4 and Xbox One. CD Projekt Red has publicly admitted that the last-gen versions are struggling with bugs and the extent has been underestimated. But why exactly do the games run so badly on the old platforms? Technology experts make a first guess.

Cyberpunk 2077: Too focused on launch

The development of Cyberpunk 2077 took around eight years, but the launch did not go as smoothly as developer CD Projekt Red probably wanted it to be. But they too know where the problems were.

The studio is currently working on Updates and Patchesto fix the crashes, glitches, and bugs that are most common on the Last Gen consoles. The first hotfix patches have already been released, and another should follow in a few days – but you have to wait until January and February for the extensive patches.

We'll explain everything you need to know about Cyberpunk 2077 in just 7 minutes:

What's the problem with last-gen consoles?

Everything that has come to light so far points to bottlenecks on several fronts. As the weakest last-gen console, the Xbox One S struggles with the most problems. Compared to the other last-gen consoles, the details of the textures have been reduced the most, in particularly demanding situations the resolution drops to just 1200×675 pixels. According to Technology expert Richard Leadbetter is the version for the PlayStation 4 Pro the currently most stable last-gen solution. Even the Xbox One X often delivers a lower frame rate, but runs in a higher resolution.

According to Digital Foundry, the reason for the performance problems can be clearly seen, since the PS5 and Xbox Series X / S are based on the same code base as the old consoles. In this way, the systems can be better compared. On the PlayStation 5, the PlayStation 4 code runs at an unlocked frame rate, while the new Xbox consoles use the Xbox One code with additional visual improvements.

The lack of space on the last-gen consoles is probably not the problem, obviously But it depends on the CPU performance and the built-in system memory. This is particularly evident when driving through the city – the consoles' CPU cannot process the data from the streaming system that quickly. Even the next-gen consoles and PC versions sometimes reach their limits here.

In a nutshell, CD Projekt Red may have been too releasing focus and simply overestimated the performance of the last-gen consoles. It is not yet known when the improved version for the next-gen consoles will be released.
