Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Preview of the new edition of the RPG classic – Gamesaktuell

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is an action role-playing game from the Japanese game studio Square Enix, which was released in 2003 exclusively for the Gamecube. On August 27, the popular fantasy game returns in one prettied remastered version on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, iOS and Android back and, in addition to a revised graphic, also offers some new features in gameplay. We were shown a lot of new material from the game and tell you what's new.

The heavily revised multiplayer mode is a special one Delicacies of the new edition. In it we can explore the fantasy world with up to four friends, and that even across platforms: whether the buddies gamble on a smartphone or console, you can network and go on a journey together.

In the original it was local with friends alone and every player needed a Game Boy Advance and link cable to be able to participate; one reason why only a few people in 2003 enjoyed the adventure, which was clearly designed for cooperative gameplay. The effort was just too great! And in the single player there wasn't even that much fun.

Save the world drop by drop

Fortunately, we don't have to worry about that anymore these days, instead we can fully concentrate on the gameplay, the atmosphere and the story. In Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles we go to Tipa, a city in a fantasy medieval world that is threatened by a cloud of poisonous miasma. This danger can only be kept in check by crystals, the power of which, however, must be regularly rekindled with the help of myrrhetau. To find these drops, we embark on an adventurous journey with a caravan of companions and meet lots of friends and enemies along the way.

We experience all of this in cute, comic 3D graphics, much sharper and more detailed than in the original version. The new edition contains new songs by the composer of the original, Kumi Tanioka. Some iconic pieces of music have also been rearranged and recorded in better quality. Furthermore, for the first time in selected sequences we can now enjoy an English dubbing of the figures, previously everything had to be read. So much for the basics, but how does role play work?

Same procedure as last year …

Alone or with friends, we explore maps and dungeons full of different opponents, all from an isometric perspective. At the end of such a map there is always an end boss, whom we have to defeat in order to get the myrrh drops we are looking for. So that we can also transport them, we always carry a crystal goblet with us that gradually fills up. In multiplayer mode, each team member can drag the myrrh chalice, but must set it down to fight. The group must then not move too far away, since the vessel also protects against the miasma. In singleplayer we use poor mogu, a sweet mogry, as a pack donkey.

Whenever we have filled our crystal goblet, one has passed and we celebrate a ritual celebration in honor of the crystal in a cutscene. This is followed by another annual cycle in which we have to collect enough rope again. Our trip is summarized in our diary. There we also find an innovation of the remastered version: we can watch all the film sequences there again. There are no fresh plot elements in the new edition – almost not. For the die-hard fans, according to the developer, a single, new cut scene was hidden – more a nice Easter egg than a particularly serious innovation. The creators do not yet want to reveal where and how this sequence can be activated.

In the game we also receive letters from relatives that are brought to us by cute mogrys. We can decide for ourselves whether we read them, how we answer them and whether we want to send items to the hunched relatives.

A new hero is born

But how do we start a new adventure? First we choose our character from one of four different tribes: the clavats, nature-defenders, the lilties, powerful warriors, the yukes, educated magicians and the selkies, wild and nimble villains. The user interface is much clearer than in the original game and we have new ways to change our character. Visually, we can customize our character in ten different ways – eight of which were specially designed for the new edition. We can also determine the gender and decide which of our eight different occupations our family pursues. This later affects our items and the business of our relatives, which we find in the city. The voice of our character can now also be selected from four different variants. However, these are rather noises than whole words or even sentences, whether our mouth-defying hero figure opens their mouths in cutscenes was not yet clear from the material presented to us.

In the game we can make lots of charming new acquaintances. For example, we meet a group of Selkies called strip bandits, Gurdy, a cheater with a memory loss, or the mysterious black knight. The new mimic capability also allows us to imitate figures from the world exactly – what exactly this new feature has for a purpose is not yet clear.

The monsters are on the collar

For the drops of myrrh, we have to do one thing first and foremost: clap what stands in our way. In addition to normal attacks and focus attacks, we can also use magic to blow away enemies and bosses. Spells work over stones that we collect on our travels. We can use it to heal ourselves, for example, or to launch fire attacks. Different spells can also be fused together. Alone, we can merge spells via the menu or with the help of our companion Mogu. In multiplayer mode, the spells of the different players can be combined into a powerful effect, depending on the timing and sequence.

Overall, both veterans and newcomers should get their money's worth in the combat system. Getting started is deliberately straightforward, but later Crystal Chronicles Remastered should also offer challenges. So there are 13 additional dungeons in the new edition with completely new boss battles and an increased level of difficulty, through which you can fight after the main story. For this purpose, new weapons and equipment have been added to the game in order to have better chances in the difficult labyrinths. We can buy items or assemble them from the blacksmith, our characters can also be improved with artifacts. We collect them in dungeons and can choose which boss we want to keep. The more successfully we fight our way through a map and the more valuable bonuses we earn, the more powerful the artifacts we find.

In addition to the full version of the game, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Lite will also be released on August 27, a free demo with the first three dungeons. If a friend owns the paid version, you can also enjoy more of the RPG in multiplayer, even if you only have the free version.

My opinion

That screams for uncomplicated, magical fun with friends!

I love the music, the exciting characters and the lovely details of the Final Fantasy series and I am a big fan of medieval fantasy. But since I did not have a Gamecube, I never enjoyed Cristal Chronicles at the time and I really want to make up for the game in a new guise. I loved the soundtrack and the cute character design, especially the cute mogrys, of course. However, what I particularly like is that Crystal Chronicles is an action role-playing game, but the atmosphere and the characters are very important. The new, extra heavy dungeons are less my case in single player. I find a nice main story more exciting than a playful challenge. However, I can really imagine trying multiplayer mode with friends and playing all night – I already know a few potential victims for it.
