Fortnite & Dota 2: Epic Games and Valve cancel their E-Sports World Cups for 2020

from Dominik Zwingmann
The Epic Games and Valve teams had to cancel their major e-sports events for 2020 due to the existing pandemic. These are the Fortnite World Cup and The International from Dota 2. Both companies hope to be able to hold events in front of an audience again in 2021. Riot Games also canceled the League of Legends mid-season invitational a few days ago.

E-sports fans worldwide will have to do without two major tournaments this year. Epic Games officials canceled the Fortnite World Cup 2020 this week. The Valve team will also not be hosting The International from Dota 2 this year. As expected, the existing corona virus pandemic is the reason behind the cancellation of the two events.

According to Epic Games, all other planned e-sports tournaments in Fortnite will be held online as planned. Only the World Cup is not possible, since players from all over the world take part in the competition and the distribution of the servers does not allow a fair and competitive fight. Epic Games is hoping for Fortnite e-sports events again in 2021 (buy now) to be able to perform in front of an audience.

Valve will initially postpone The International indefinitely and also anticipates an event in 2021. The e-sport tournament with the highest prize money of all e-sport events was supposed to take place in Stockholm this time. By the way, two weeks ago Riot Games also canceled the mid-season invitational. So far, the plans for Worlds 2020 in China have not changed. There is no date for the event yet, but the League of Legends World Championship usually takes place in October. The final is planned in the Shanghai stadium in front of more than 80,000 spectators. It would also be the tenth League of Legends World Cup.
