Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060
Finding a graphics card that is suitable for modern games at high details without having to pay at least 70 percent surcharge compared to six months ago has as much prospect of success as saving FC Schalke 04 from relegation to the Bundesliga. Whether it even plays a role apart from daydreams that on Thursday the new Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 came onto the market is therefore questionable. Because that new model from Nvidia is already sold out, exorbitant prices are looming where it is still offered. On eBay we have already discovered copies sold for well over 700 euros, or rather: we have not discovered any that have so far been sold under 700 euros.
Nevertheless, today we take a closer look at the new car and its performance by analyzing and statistically summarizing the test reports from editors who were lucky enough to get hold of a test model. But first let's take a look at the graphics card market in general.
Excursus on the situation with graphics cards
If you are now wondering what is going on and how all this is happening, you have probably not noticed anything of the graphics card misery of the last few months.
Two weeks ago we had already published a detailed special on this and also tries to show alternatives and ways out. In summary: The new RTX graphics cards from Nvidia, which will be released from September 2020, would actually offer a great performance for gamers if their price recommendation were the price for which they could be obtained reasonably reliably in stores. But the GeForce RTX 3060 TI, 3070 and 3080 (we leave out the 3090, as it is aimed more at professionals) were sold out when they were released and have only been available for exorbitant prices since then. The same thing happened with the new AMD bolides RX 6800 and 6800 XT, and the same is to be feared for the GeForce RTX 3060.
But even if a weaker graphics card is enough: Even formerly cheaper graphics cards with prices below 400 or even below 200 euros gradually got hold of it, and so even for an absolute entry-level graphics card like the GeForce GTX 1650 at least 230 euros are due – in October it was still 140 euros. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Super is not available for less than 399 euros – the October price: 200 euros. AMD graphics cards are currently not available at all, an RX 5600 XT, literally a single model, is currently available for over 900 euros. A few months ago it was less than 300 euros. An alternative under 200 euros, which is okay in terms of price-performance at least to bridge the gap, we recently tested: the already ancient GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, which is still available in stores. Their prices are moving towards 200 euros, so the surcharge for a GTX 1650 (from 230 euros) is now almost okay.
But now we come to the Nvidia GeForce GTX 3060 and its performance – and who knows: maybe measures against scalpers, which normal customers had bought away the new releases of graphics cards with the help of bots on a large scale, will have an effect, so they will In the longer term there is hope for an RTX 3060 at a moderate price.
