WoW: Why is Blizzard thinking about breaking tradition?

Although both factions have their own charm, the main imbalance is the number of hardcore players – there are more Horde than Alliance players. But why is that so?

Game Director Ion Hazzikostas explained that it has to do with the fact that at the time around the "Mists of Pandaria" expansion, Horde peoples such as Orcs and Trolls had a superior racial ability compared to Alliance peoples. Since competitive raid guilds were always looking for it, many players began to to switch to the Horde. This created a kind of vicious circle in which players were increasingly forced to give up their Alliance characters.

The Game Director added that he does not believe that anything can be done about the imbalance in the short term, but that "a top priority" is to address the problem long term without losing the feeling that the factions are actually still enemies are. "If we lose that, then we have lost something very valuable," says Hazzikostas.
