When John Hammond first created dinosaurs from DNA preserved in amber and devised an amusement park with the primeval lizards, it was not without reason that all of this took place on a lonely island in the Pacific. In the event of the inevitable catastrophe, the problem would at least be limited to a small patch of earth. That dinosaurs and human civilization do not get along well became clear at the latest when someone came up with the brilliant idea of sending a T-Rex to San Diego.

After the events of the recent movie “Jurassic World: The Fallen Kingdom” all attempts to limit the artificially created dinosaur population to islands have failed. Triceratops, brachiosaurs, T-Rex and Co. are at large on the continental mainland. This is where Jurassic World Evolution 2 comes in and, among other things, makes it your job to get this chaos under control again. We were now able to get our own first impression at a digital hands-on event, where we were able to play in both the campaign and a challenge mission for two hours.

Jurassic World Evolution 2 | PREVIEW | Dino park manager alluded to

Lord of the chaos

The developers kick us out of the campaign on a mission that takes place in the mountains of the US state of Washington. Here we find the crumbling remains of a camp of dinosaur poachers.

In order to catch escaped dinosaurs, we can swing ourselves into the helicopter and behind the tranquilizer rifle, as in the predecessor.

The animals have long since broken out of their much too small enclosures and we start the mission accordingly at the controls of a helicopter. Our first task is to stun two Carnotaurus in the area. To do this, we control the helicopter as in the predecessor and, if necessary, take control of the ranger with the tranquilizer rifle. Two well-placed arrows per dinosaur and the carnivorous giants go to sleep first.

Then we are faced with the usual tasks of a park manager, even if we are not creating the park to amuse visitors here. In order to master the chaos left by the poachers, we are building a control center, power supply, ranger station and a new, sufficiently dimensioned enclosure for the two captured dinosaurs. The rangers are essential to ensure the proper welfare of the animals. Not only do they repair damage and refill the feeding stations, but they also collect important data about the dinosaurs. Without regular inspection by rangers, we have no information about the health status and needs of the lizards.

With the jeep on a tour of discovery

In our campaign mission, however, the rangers are also used for another task. We are supposed to find and catch more runaway, dangerous dinosaurs.

In order to find escaped dinosaurs in the vast wilderness, we race through the landscape in the jeep and analyze clues.

To do this, we clamp ourselves behind the wheel of a jeep and race through the landscape. On the way we repeatedly discover clues such as fallen trees and carcasses. We scan these to find out more about our destination. So the indications that it is a large carnivore are condensing until we can finally read off its type from the tracks. What we particularly notice when looking for the dinosaur, which turns out to be the Allosaurus, are the enormous dimensions that the cards in Jurassic World Evolution 2 can assume.

When we finally discover the animal we were looking for, we are already incredibly far away from our base with our jeep. This becomes clear again when we have the meanwhile anesthetized Allosaurus transported to the camp by helicopter. The flying heavy transport is on the road for a damn long time. If everything that is drivable on these large maps can ultimately be built on, we have an enormous amount of space here for the expansion of huge parks. No comparison to the narrow and limited islands from the predecessor.

The power of science

Unfortunately, our limited time with the campaign mission came to an end, even if we had not yet achieved all of the mission objectives. Instead, the developers wanted us to experience the challenge mode. This mode is about meeting certain challenges and building a five-star park. In certain scenarios, even under time pressure. For us, however, it starts off leisurely. On an extensive map in the Canadian mountains with a picturesque lake in the center, we should settle the first dinosaurs, increase guest comfort to 75 percent and generate certain income.

Scientists play a central role this time. We select the experts based on their values and then deploy them in the appropriate areas.

The biggest innovation that we notice relatively quickly are the scientists. Our park no longer just runs as an anonymous entity, where staff is irrelevant, just like that. We don’t have to manage personnel for every activity, as in many other park managers. But with the scientists, a certain personality factor is now also moving into our dinosaur park. We need trained specialists for a variety of tasks. If we want to send an expedition to look for DNA samples, we have to assign scientists. If we want to study fossils, we need scientists. When we research new buildings for the park and hatch dinosaurs, we need scientists.

The men and women academics have different values in the areas of logistics, genetics and well-being. Accordingly, they can be used more or less well in the various areas of the park. Of course, hiring scientists costs money. Not just a one-time recruitment fee, but also a regular salary per minute of play. From now on it is important to keep an eye on personnel costs. In addition, the employees have a degree of exhaustion. If a scientist is exhausted, we can give him a break in a staff building.

Complex draft

The scientists are just one example of the fact that the developers have tried to establish more complexity and depth in many areas of the game. After the rather superficial predecessor it is certainly not the worst idea. The division of visitors into four categories, each of which has to be satisfied differently, also plays a role in this development. However, it remains to be seen whether there are actually advantages to specializing in certain groups, or whether a balanced approach is the best solution in the end anyway.

Unfortunately, the playing time that we were allowed to spend with the pre-release version of the game was far too short to see all the great innovations. We would have liked to show you more of the new pterosaurs or even the water dinosaurs for the first time. But unfortunately we have not been able to make progress with the research in the time available. Jurassic World Evolution 2 made a good impression. We’ll have more time to play by November 9th, when the game will be released for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X / S.
