The atmospheric predecessor was able to keep us on the rod until the end due to its dense atmosphere and the gripping story about the nightmarish "throat", the imprecise controls, a far too strong focus on boring stealth and levels that were a little too uninspired the horror adventure but qualitatively far away from the eye-catching role model Inside. With Little Nightmares 2, the boys and girls from Tarsier Studios want to eliminate old mistakes, but also strike new paths. Instead of the throat and the claustrophobic mood of the first album, this time the focus is on the outside world and the so-called "Signal Tower". In addition, thanks to Mono, Six is no longer on its own.
It was clear that a second part would come at some point due to the success, but publisher Bandai Namco only made it official at Gamescom 2019. There, the indie adventure with a strong horror focus was announced with a small teaser. Normally we would have taken a closer look at the title at this year's edition of Gamescom, but due to the ongoing corona pandemic (damn you!), The preview event had to take place from home.
We were allowed to venture into the grotesque world of Little Nightmares 2 and reveal to you why the previously played section on the chic horror adventure around the children Mono and Six was able to convince us enormously.

In the debut released in 2017, the plot focused on the young girl Six as well as the claustrophobic environments within the throat. The overarching topic for the developers at the time was "hunger". A lot should change in the sequel: First of all, this time we take on the role of the boy Mono, about whom very little is known so far. However, Six will continue to be an important figure because she is always by our side. If you are hoping for an exciting co-op adventure in the direction of Unravel, we will unfortunately have to disappoint you. Although attempts were initially made to implement co-op gameplay, it quickly became apparent that the actual vision of the series would suffer too much. Despite all of this, the second character gives a completely new feel to the game. As Six has already proven in the first part, she is a strong personality, despite everything, both characters are always dependent on each other.
Another important change is that this time around, the developers want to focus on the world outside the Maw. So the signal tower should be at the center of the plot. The overriding theme in Part Two is "Escape". New antagonists include the hunter and the teacher.

In our intro session, Mono wakes up next to a television. What this is all about is still unknown, but the many televisions in the game world are said to have a serious meaning. Then we move through an enormously atmospheric and harmoniously staged forest, which challenges us with little puzzles. Again and again we come across leaf-covered areas in which bear traps are hiding. A new feature of Little Nightmares 2 is that from now on we can use certain items as "weapons". Of course, they don't help us much against the huge antagonists, but using a large shoe as a throwing object for the bear traps in the leaves works quite well. Then our way slowly leads us to an abandoned house full of body parts and swarms of flies. After a few puzzles we manage to free Six from a basement. The remainder of the demo focuses on Six and Mono's escape from one of the new main antagonists, the hunter.
Progress in every way

Little Nightmares 2 turns exactly the right screws and presents an extremely promising horror adventure. Mono and Six are already working great as a team. In addition, the team came up with many small details that are good for the game world, the atmosphere and the motivation curve. If we fail, for example, after a brief loading screen we look at Mono and Six, who are crouching and desperate on the floor. Different headgear for mono can also be found everywhere in the game world. At the beginning, the shy protagonist still carries a bag with two peepholes on his head to create a playful incentive, but to search the world carefully increases motivation. The short play session for Little Nightmares 2 convinced us with ease and we really want to see more of it. Hopefully soon!
