2019 was a great year from a Nintendo Switch owner's perspective! One highlight was chasing the next, and especially in the second half of the year, large calibers such as Super Mario Maker 2, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Luigi's Mansion 3 and Pokémon sword and shield went hand in hand. Take a look at our video on the switch highlights 2019! However, yesterday is over, we are looking into the future and it is – foggy. As usual, Nintendo cannot be seen in the cards. The really big bar of announcements will probably only be served as part of a new Nintendo Direct edition – good that such an apparently is coming relatively soon!
But that doesn't mean we don't even know what we're going to be playing on Nintendo Switch in 2020. A lot has already been announced on the third-party side. Our three editors Katharina Pache, Lukas Schmid and Johannes Gehrling, who are particularly fond of Nintendo, therefore give you their personal potential highlights of the young year on the following pages!
But that's not all: we are greedy and therefore write down our wishes; games that have not yet been confirmed, but we'd love to see you in 2020. There is even a difference of interpretation or two – while Lukas considers The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 and Metroid Prime to be quite likely for 2020, Johannes just categorizes the titles according to his wishes. But read for yourself – let's start with Katharina's view!
Katharina's highlights 2020
So far 2020 is unfortunately not so full of high-quality (and especially Nintendo-owned) games. And that Bayonetta really will be released this year is of course a very optimistic assessment. But I'm sure Nintendo still has some pearls behind it that it will provide us with over the months. I leaned far out of the window when I asked for it – who knows, maybe at least one of them will come true?
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
I loved Animal Crossing on my DS back then! And now the series is finally coming to the Switch in March! I've been hooked on the hype since the announcement, even though I usually prefer games with crisp gameplay. Animal Crossing is simply a meditative experience, a small, virtual short vacation that relaxes and distracts me from everyday life and its stress. Actually, I could have used New Horizons before the holidays!
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Source: Team Cherry
Hollow Knight is one of my favorite indie games. I was thrilled with everything about the adventure: the beautiful animations, the bittersweet background story, the crisp fights and of course the sophisticated Metroidvania level design. Now there is finally more of it: In Silksong you play Hornet, a needle-armed beetle woman who also plays a major role in the predecessor. We will explore a whole new kingdom in Silksong, only when, that is the exciting question. I'm pretty sure I will release this year.
Okay, that Bayonetta 3 will be released this year is far less likely than the upcoming release of Hollow Knight: Silksong. But maybe Platinum Games has been preparing for a while? Her latest work Astral Chain has been published for a few months. Bayonetta 3 is a sequel to this, so maybe some content could be taken over, which may reduce the effort. In any case, I want to finally see the black-haired witch in action again – the first part is one of my favorite games ever.
Katharina's game wishes for 2020
I want these unconfirmed titles!
The Pikmin strategy series is, in my opinion, one of the best private labels from Nintendo. The gameplay is extraordinary, imaginative, it's fun, and for me, after completing the adventure, every part makes me want to keep playing! And immediately! But most of the time it means instead: wait, wait, wait. Would it be nice if an announcement about Pikmin was made in the next few months and the next part was ready for the switch a short time later. Only this time with more scope please, and again with multiplayer support. I enjoyed the co-op part of the last game as much as I enjoyed the single player campaign.
A new F-Zero
After all, Pikmin is a reasonably likely candidate for a sequel to the Switch. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about F-Zero. For too long it has been quiet about the fast racing game series around Captain Falcon, but it would be such a good addition to Mario Kart! It is not for nothing that the fun racer with Mario and his friends can always be found in the lists of the best-selling switch games – gamers love arcade racers! Yes, F-Zero has a different style, not such cute characters, but the title would be just as suitable for multiplayer sessions with friends or online.
Source: From Software
The action adventure Elden Ring is the new work by From Software (Dark Souls, Sekiro), which was developed in collaboration with G.R.R. Martin (author of Game of Thrones) emerges. The switch will probably not be able to handle the graphics of the PC version, but that doesn't have to mean anything. Dark Souls are now also available on the Switch. I want to play Elden Ring on the go!
The Legend of Bum-bo
Source: Edmund McMillen
The Legend of Bum-bo is Edmund McMillen, the creator of Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac. The unusual mixture of Bejeweled and Rogue-like is already available on the PC and I enjoy it – but I'd rather experience it on the go.
Super Mario Galaxy HD
Back then, when I was playing Super Mario Galaxy, I thought: Wow, but how are you going to top that? In fact, a Mario game never came closer to perfection for me after that. That is why I would like a remake of the good intergalactic adventure on the Switch, also in a double pack with the sequel.
It continues on the next page with Lukas' highlights and wishes!
