Ryzen 5000 is here
The release of the new AMD processes of the Zen 3 generation is imminent or has already taken place. The first models are the Ryzen 5 5600X, Ryzen 7 5800X, Ryzen 9 5900X and Ryzen 9 5950X. The The PC Games hardware price comparison already lists the Ryzen 7 5800X and Ryzen 9 5950X ( As of November 5, 3:00 p.m.) for 486 or 999 euros. The Ryzen 5 5600X could be of particular interest to gamers, as it costs 300 euros for the release, but will likely become cheaper soon. In the coming week we will summarize the tests already published by specialist editors in order to classify the performance of the new CPUs and to be able to give purchase advice.
Suitable mainboard for Zen 3
However, some people will probably want to buy one of the new CPUs even without test results – however, it is important to consider the compatibility with the mainboard. We want to give you the following tips:
- With a B550 or X570 chipset you are on the safe side.
- Anyone who already has a Socket AM4 motherboard, but one with one of the older chipsets, has to find out from the manufacturer whether the Zen 3 processors can also be used with a BIOS update.
- If you wanted to buy a new mainboard anyway or have to because you are not yet working with the AM4 socket, you should buy a mainboard with one of the two 500 chipsets. There are also compatible mainboards, for example with the X470 chipset – but you shouldn't use such a mainboard because of supposed savings, if only because the 500 chipsets are already PCIe4.0-capable, which, by the way, also makes the use of the corresponding particularly special fast M.2 SSDs.
- When buying a mainboard, don't forget to pay attention to the size. ATX mainboards fit into most cases – there µATX models are also a good choice, as they can be cheaper with the same performance and with only a few compromises in terms of equipment. If you have a small case, you often have to use a µATX or, in the case of mini cases, even a mini IXT mainboard.
In the price comparison of the PC Games Hardware you will find corresponding mainboards we have already activated some filter options in this link. There you will find ATX and µATX mainboards for Socket AM4 with the chipsets B550 and X570 pre-filtered and, as further target properties, a connection option for at least two case fans (in addition to the CPU fan). It starts at around 75 euros.
