Imagine you're an unborn bull shark girl, cut by your mother's womb by a nasty (and most likely smelly) hillbilly named Scaly Pete and left to die. Your goal is clear: survive, grow tall and strong and then bite Scaly Pete. However, this is not a spinning mill of ours, but the story hanger for the upcoming Action RPG Maneater from Tripwire Interactive. The premise sounds pretty bleak, but don't worry. The developers of Blindside Interactive don't take the shark revenge story more seriously than they should. Instead, there is a lot of rubbish, chaos and destruction.

The rather funny approach of the open world adventure can also be seen directly in the presentation, because your path from baby shark to the scare of the seas is part of the reality show Sharkhunters vs. Maneater (buy now for € 39.99) s presents. Even crazy actions are commented dry in the documentary style by spokesman Chris Parnell (Cyril Figgis from Archer) – even if you use the victims in your haimaul to spit them at your opponents as projectiles. Although this is funny, you should eat the numerous different fish, turtles and people, as this will fill up your health and ensure that your shark gets bigger and stronger.

If you keep your eyes open, you can also discover particularly nutritious meals that unlock new skills or enhance existing skills. For example, it should be possible to increase the time that a shark can spend on land to eat the beach more relaxed. However, this should also depend on the day-night cycle. So at night other fish and other animals come out of their hiding places, but then there are at most a few drunk teenagers on the beach.

But back to the additional skills and bonuses: certain armor can even be unlocked, put on and combined. For example, there is bone armor that protects against damage and armor that delivers electric shocks. If you combine these, your shark is still protected, but can also be quite electrifying with the tail fin if it is attacked.

There will be a total of seven areas in Maneater, which should not only differ optically, but of course also contain different food sources and enemies. Among other things, you swim through dirty waters close to a big city, through swamps, through the depths of the ocean, but also past a beach resort, where the beautiful, the rich and especially delicious are. However, if you eat a lot of people, you will soon find hunters on the scene. As in GTA, your search level increases. If you simply swim away, the hunters will continue to guard the water, but if you fight them, your reputation as ruler of the seas will increase and you will receive special rewards.

But not only heavily armed meat bags stand in your way. There is an optional boss in each of the seven areas. Among other things, you compete against a large white shark or against a giant crocodile. An insane albino sperm whale with an anchor attached to its tail to attack you has also been confirmed. The developers say that you should always consider whether you are already strong enough to measure yourself against these beasts. Therefore, you should also be careful, because the bosses are hiding, but if you eat their food, they come out and attack.

The fights against the boss opponents should be demanding and tactical, according to developers. After a victory, however, you get really big rewards and special evolution points with which the shark can be further developed. So far, however, only fights against human opponents have been shown, which also look damn funny. For example, you jump out of the water, do several somersaults and grab a fighter from the jet ski when landing. Or you swim under a boat, only to jump up and break through in the middle.

As funny as it looks and as promising as the developers' statements sound, we are still a little skeptical about some things. So far there are no statements about the general quest design and graphically Maneater looks nice, but cannot compete with other current titles.

My opinion

"Silly and bloody – Maneater is high on my most wanted list."

I really hope that the developers come up with a good quest design, because it would be a shame if you could just swim around and eat. The air would be out after half an hour. However, I am optimistic that maneater will not be bored, because the information published so far and the gameplay material shown rather suggest that Tripwire and Blindside deliver wonderfully creative nonsense that is actually fun. The fights look really cool, the areas are varied and supposedly there are supposed to be many secrets to discover. The presentation with the narrator also makes a good impression. But I'm particularly looking forward to fighting the seven monsters of the sea. I think Maneater is going to be stupid, but fun.

In addition to blockbusters, numerous smaller games also impressed at gamescom. For example, we had a look at the Hai-GTA Maneater!
