Mario Maker 2: Zelda and more

There it is, the suspicious free spot in the menu, and smiles at us viciously: Since the day of release, over the optional style to Super Mario 3D World, the words "bonus game themes" are flashing. Yes, plural, not singular. And since the first day we are waiting for another style to be added, be it Super Mario 64, Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Land 2 or another. Instead, after the launch, apart from a multiplayer update, it became very quiet around Super Mario Maker 2 (buy now for 47,99 €), Is now finally the new style in the starting blocks? No, but the existing styles are complemented by cool assets and content.

Probably the most interesting: Link from The Legend of Zelda finds a new home in Super Mario Maker 2! We remember: Even in the first Mario Maker for Wii U Link was available as a character in the Super Mario Bros. style, as well as many other Nintendohelden, so you scanned their Amiibo plastic figures via NFC chip and thus integrated into the game ,

There, Link was no more than a costume, otherwise his repertoire of movement was not different from that of Mario. Very different in Mario Maker 2! The mushroom item can now alternatively be placed as a master sword in the levels, of course, in tubes and question mark blocks. If we let it go, we will not only become Link, but the music will also switch to the iconic sounds of the action-adventure series. Depending on whether we are on the upperworld or in the underground, there are even different pieces from the 8-bit offshoots. Yes, 8 bits, because again the costume only works in Super Mario Bros. levels.

The master sword has been integrated in the form of an optional variant of the standard mushroom. It can be placed in the levels like any other item.

Link himself can continue to jump like Mario, in which he turns again after a hit, but in addition so much more! At the push of a button, he hits his sword and even disassembles many unbreakable adversaries, such as bone-dry ones, and most easily breakable blocks. We can also do a stab attack down in the jump! If we press down on the directional pad, we pull out our shield and can then block dangers like rushing stone blocks effortlessly. With the shoulder button we access the bow and arrow, activate switches with the freely tiltable shooting tool or collect coins which are difficult to reach by means of arrow contact. Oh yes, and of course, we also defeat opponents! And last but not least, with Y plus D-pad above, we can drop bombs and then drop or throw them, but be careful not to hurt ourselves with the explosion that follows after a few seconds. Links abilities allow plenty of playful opportunities and provide builders with a wealth of new level ideas. So you can now make some 2D dungeons, as you know from Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link. The restriction to 8-bit optics is a shame, but the update is a great thing!

Enemy scolding, icy cold

Links abilities allow you to construct true 2D dungeons, solving their puzzles with the help of sword, shield, bombs, and bow and arrow.

And Link is not alone, even if the other new content is not quite as exciting. With the Pokeys, the living cacti, which consist of several body parts and whose height you can set yourself, as well as the spikes, the green journeyman who throws with spiked balls after us, two new opponents come into play. As usual we can modify them with wings, mushrooms and other items. Both enemies are available in all graphic styles, including Super Mario 3D World. It gets frosty with the two of the new items. There were already ice blocks, but now also that variant that melts and are hidden in the coins. And in Snowy Highlands, we can now place snowballs that get bigger as they roll through the white-powdered landscape. Spikes are being transformed into snowball throwing aids in snow levels! Also new: so-called P-blocks. If we activate a switch, otherwise permeable blocks will turn into this one. Just as with the standard coin blocks, this conversion is only temporary, and is triggered by a switch. However, these blocks are indestructible and can not be collected like coins by mistake, so they can be used more strategically during construction. In Super Mario 3D World style, all these updates are usable except the ice blocks. For the graphic style gets an exclusive new feature donated.
Now we can put on the ground acceleration fields, which provide especially in connection with the Koopa car for rapid fun.

The ice blocks allow you to build really nasty levels. If we are not careful, we will even melt the ground under the feet with the fire flower!

The last innovation is not an item, but a mode: If we are online, we have the update of the so-called Ninji Speedrun available. Nintendo will gradually add new levels, which will apparently be available for seven days each. The special feature: We see the runs of our competitors in the form of ninjis, small black creatures that jump around us. The sheer mass of simultaneous recorded movements that happen around us is impressive! Let's see how much long-term motivation the mode offers, it's definitely a nice idea. Let's see how much long-term motivation the mode offers, it's definitely a nice idea. As a reward for completed levels, there are stamps and new builders' clothes for our Mii. A new style of graphics would have put the crown on the Mario Maker 2 update, but there's enough to keep builders and hopping heroes busy for a long time, especially as the new content is added completely for free. In addition, Nintendo promises that more updates will be made available in the future. The hope for a new style dies so last!

The Super Mario Maker 2 update will be available to all owners of the Switch-exclusive game from December 5th. Attention: for the online contents of the kit you need an active Nintendo online membership.

My opinion

"Not quite what I had hoped for, but still a great thing!"

I went to Nintendo with my anticipation of my first-ever Nintendo debut, and now I'd get to play the eagerly anticipated new graphics style for Super Mario Maker 2. That was not the case, but I was not disappointed. The new free content extends the existing graphics style package namely very competent! Of course, the most exciting new feature is Link as a playable character. This allows you to build levels that would not have been possible before. But the handful of other new content is a great thing. Above all, the Pokeys, after all, one of the most iconic types of opponents, were long overdue! A pity I find only that the usual Mario Maker restrictions continue to exist. Running a link through a New Super Mario Bros stage, such as his design from the Link's Awakening remake, would have been great.
