In Germany, Sony is usually one step ahead with the PlayStation – and by a large margin. But a look at the current trend figures shows impressively: Microsoft is far from defeated and can even overtake the console leader in some regions of Germany.
Google Trends: New federal states have greater interest in "Xbox"
Sony was able to sell more than 4 million PS5 consoles within a very short time, and the devices are still completely out of stock even months after the official start of sales. So a great triumph for Sony? Anyone take a look at the Google trends analysis Germany throws and juxtaposes "Xbox" and "PS5" as search terms, will notice: Interest within the Federal Republic seems to be balanced.
In many federal states the two terms are only separated by a few percentage points – and in the new federal states there is even a big surprise: In Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, “Xbox” has the edge. In Saxony, the Xbox wins with a whopping 58 percent:

Xbox vs. PS5: What Do Google Trends Numbers Say?
Google Trends is a tool that visualizes the popularity of individual terms within a certain period of time. In order to measure this “popularity”, Google search queries from users are evaluated anonymously and compiled. Basically, the more search queries are made, the more popular the relevant key term is.
But why is it that “Xbox” is currently superior to “PS5”? A look at the breakdown of the “increasing search queries” provides food for a first thesis: With the PlayStation 5, users are primarily looking for shops and stores that sell the console. Currently, the providers Medimax, Expert, Euronics and Müller seem to be in the focus of the players.
With the term “Xbox”, however, the distribution looks a little different. Players are also looking for games for their console. Especially FIFA 21, Fall Guys, Assassin's Creed: Valhalla and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War seem to be in demand right now. Due to the different search interests, it is therefore not surprising that more search queries are currently being made using the term “Xbox” instead of “PS5”. In addition, it should not be forgotten that search queries for the old consoles still play a role with the term “Xbox”.
Last year, Google also revealed which games were particularly popular with gamers. Some placements surprised us:
Anyone who swaps the term “Xbox” in the input mask for “Xbox Series” will notice that the result shifts significantly in favor of Sony:
The search terms also change accordingly. Suddenly, with the “Xbox Series” too, the focus is primarily on the intention to buy. Saturn, MediaMarkt and Otto seem to be particularly in demand at the moment.
What is also noticeable: Google Trends also suggests terms such as “Buy PS5” as “similar searches” for the “Xbox Series”, while “Buy Xbox Series” is not shown as an alternative for the keyword “PS5”. A concrete conclusion cannot be drawn from this, but the observation is certainly curious.
