Microsoft supports Epic Games in the fight against Apple

from Dominik Zwingmann
With Microsoft, Epic Games has brought another supporter in the fight against Apple to its own side. Microsoft is not concerned with Fortnite, but with ongoing support for the Unreal Engine. The graphics engine could disappear completely for iOS and Mac if Epic Games were excluded from Apple's developer program.

What began a few days ago with an update for the mobile version of Fortnite has now turned into a gigantic dispute between Epic Games and Apple. Now another giant has interfered in the dispute. Accordingly, Epic Games is now getting support from Microsoft. The focus is not on the return of Fortnite, but on the ongoing support of the Unreal Engine.

Apple officials recently threatened Epic Games with being kicked out of the company's developer program. This exit could not only have consequences for Epic Games itself, but also for all studios from around the world that use the Unreal Engine for software on iOS and Mac. In one Statement Kevin Gammill (Microsoft General Manager for Gaming) states, among other things, that excluding the Unreal Engine would put many game developers at a considerable disadvantage. Xbox boss Phil Spencer also commented on this on Twitter.

From August 28, 2020, according to Apple, all partnerships with Epic Games will be terminated if the company does not adhere to the guidelines. The Epic Games team has already sued this measure in court. We will keep you up to date on further developments. Incidentally, Microsoft still has some difficulties with Apple. Due to the strict guidelines, xCloud cannot currently be started for iOS. Google Stadia is still not available for iOS devices either.
