If one day you seriously believe that you look ten years younger than your peers, then you are old. Really old. I’m so old that I had a dodo as a pet when I was a kid. Meanwhile, Mother Nature threatens ME with extinction. Because the thoughts on it can often only be borne with gallows humor, as a glowing Atari 2600 and Commodore 64 admirer I occasionally shout “8 bit please!” and consider myself very funny and original. That lifts the mood of the grave a little.

I get away with it cheaper and with better liver values if I start my C64 to indulge in nostalgia with International Soccer, The Great Giana Sisters or Katakis. For a long time I thought there was no better way to travel through time. Until I came into contact with the homebrew scene. She taught me better by serving me her homebrew.

Most recently, the Commodore 64 was my DeLorean and the game Soulless 2: The Armor Of Gods, which was only released at the beginning of September, was the flux compensator. But I had already paddled around 50 titles from the 2020/21 years, talked to developers and opened wonderfully old-school packs. Now I know why it is so much fun to play new games on an antique. More on that later.

With the Protovision Heimcomputer GmbH A German company also offers fresh meat for the old-fashioned computer, which fans affectionately call “bread box”. On the one hand, customers can download so-called disk images from the Berlin-based company for little money (from 4.99 euros). They run, for example, in a PC program such as VICE (Versatile Commodore Emulator) or on the THEC64 console released in 2019. The data can also be stored on 5¼-inch floppy disks.

“Even if the homebrew market doesn’t have much to do with financially, I’m satisfied. We just had our 10,000th order since 2013. “<br data-lazy-src=

On the other hand, the games are available from 30 euros in high-quality packaging, with neat instructions and witty extras. “Amazingly, our physical versions sell better than the downloads, and not only from collectors,” reveals IT product manager Tim Jakob Chen-Voos (42), spokesman for Protovision. “The box and the gimmicks make for an overall experience. Unpacking a box and enjoying the details is more memorable than just starting a game.”

According to Jakob Voos, around 30 noteworthy games for the 64 kilobyte machine from Commodore appear every year. Ten are sold professionally, the others only online and often for free – like the best of 2020 and 2021 in my picture gallery “Top 10 Free Games”. Homebrew works are created through love and passion. Neither publishers nor developers make a lot of money, even if they sell their babies at full price.

“I think it makes sense to spice up new C64 titles with modern convenience functions, in my case for example with the stealth mechanics and a continuous memory function.”

“The sales figures fluctuate between a two-digit number up to a few hundred pieces,” says Achim Volkers. The teacher from Bielefeld rediscovered the computer of his youth ten years ago. Since then he has been programming new games. For example, The Isle of the Cursed Prophet, which made it into my top 10. “In any case, the statutory minimum wage will never be reached,” he jokes. “I can take my girlfriend out to dinner again.”

Back to Protovision: So far, the publisher has sold the shoot ’em ups Galencia and Soul Force 700 times each. The record is held by Sam’s Journey, a Jump & Run from 2017. I believe that hardly any of the 3,000 players have regretted the purchase. For me, the title designed by German Chester Kollschen feels like a 10 out of 10. I consider it one of the best C64 games in history, maybe even number 1. I am particularly impressed by the variety and the brightly colored optics.

Incidentally, especially hard-core fans from the homebrew scene do not understand the C64 as a retro computer. “For me it is not nostalgia, but a computer that has justifiably made it into the modern age,” Jakob Voos tells me. “But not because you can do everything as well with it as with a PC, but because you can do some things better.” As a nostalgic, I can only understand that to a limited extent. With a computer from 1982 you are at least years ahead of the CDU party headquarters in terms of digitization.

Why do homeowners (top left on the stairs) wear black Sado-Maso masks in the action adventure The Isle of the cursed Prophet? I'm still puzzling. There's not even straw on the floor.

When Jakob Voos really gets started, sparks of enthusiasm fly:

“A C64 doesn’t cause any trouble. I never have problems with drivers. It only takes a second to start. There are no surprises or whims, it just works. Today, players usually buy module sockets. They have next to none Loading times. If you use a real Commodore with a monitor or television, you will never be annoyed by lags. There are no input delays, no output lags and no background processes that lead to sudden jerking. This is why a Cevi is perfect for games played by Benefit from precise control. Typical examples are jump & runs and shooters. So we are countering an increasingly complex modern world that suffers from online updateritis with a system that is bursting with simplicity and speed in operation. “

The measure of all things for the Commodore 64: Sam's Journey is at the level of current PC games. For jump and run fans it is a must in the truest sense of the word.

Some 64 apostles pay 1,000 euros and more for a SuperCPU, which is rarely available on the second-hand market. Believe it or not, there is exactly one commercial game that was specially developed for this accelerator card: Metal Dust, a shoot ’em up from 2005. Otherwise, browsers, Wifi / Ethernet cards, layout programs, a four- Player interface and much more.

The Shoot 'em up Metal Dust is the only commercial game that has been specially developed for the C64 SuperCPU.

Protovision is currently developing a gamepad. This controller, which should now surprise old readers, has not just one huge, single red fire button, but eight. Some new Cevi games support multiple buttons. Otherwise the thing would also be for the buttocks.

If children get lost in this article and want to moan about the graphics on the screenshots, I have to consider: You would have to buy 250,000 C64 computers to access the RAM of a current smartphone. So I expect some respect for the developers. Otherwise it’s off to the silent stairs!
