New Super Lucky's Tale in Test: Extremely Improved Hopping Fun!

In the 1990s, you could barely exhale twice, without in the meantime, a developer announced a new mascot hopper. Meanwhile, the adventures around often animal protagonists have become much rarer, probably because off the big caliber like Super Mario or Sonic hardly any of them could prove – neither financially nor qualitatively. But now and then comes yet another courageous new representative of the subgenre around the corner, as a few years ago, Super Lucky's Tale with the eponymous Fox Lucky in the lead role.

The once VR-exclusive and later on Xbox One implemented game but was like his many intellectual predecessors little success granted. The sales were moderate and the quality suffered from an extremely inaccurate control and a fixed camera, which made many jump passages to the patience.

Why is the implementation of the title for the Nintendo Switch now but a pretty good rating under our text? Well, because the developers at New Super Lucky's Tale (buy now for 39,99 €) did so much more than just porten an existing game on a new platform. The two most striking mistakes are history. The camera is now free to move to selected levels, which are denied from the top view, as well as interspersed 2D worlds. As a result, there is significantly less involuntary screen death due to lack of clarity than before. And the general controls have also been adjusted so that Lucky does not have to hide behind the precision of a Super Mario Odyssey. His move set is much lower – our hero can jump, perform a ramming attack, dig through loose soil, strike and not much else – but in comparison to the original, subtleties such as a slip maneuver have been added and the flow of exploring the worlds set, convinced.

Likewise largely convinced the gameplay. As I said, there are 2D worlds that are short but fun. In addition, all sorts of optional skill sections, where we carry a marble overboard, await us, as well as puzzle rooms. Unfortunately, both are pretty repetitive. Most of the time we spend in varied and freely explorable 3D worlds. Bouncy challenges, hidden collectibles await us to a reasonable extent, and sometimes nicely made bosses await us. In between, it is important to explore small but beautiful Hubworlds.

Thematically in levels and upper worlds of green meadows over white beaches, ghost houses and much more is offered. The nice thing is that apart from the mentioned riddles and marble boards, we hardly ever do the same thing. Every world puts something else in focus. Then it's time to organize a concert for a band made up of worms, to free their involuntarily dancing fish creatures from their suffering by destroying loudspeakers, or to try out all the attractions at a fair. Incidentally, only a fraction of the worlds have to be passed to reach the end of the game – as there is hardly a real fun-stinker underneath, they are all happily completed! As good as the gameplay is the humor. It is child friendly, but really funny and the dialogues are well written. Anyone who grew up with the old rare hops on the N64 will quickly feel at home in this regard.

Unfortunately, the fun is over very quickly, even when you complete all the tasks. You will never have problems on your way because even the endgame levels are only slightly more challenging than the rest of the game. Especially the bosses require a minimum of tactics. Even technically, there is something to criticize despite a pretty graphics and a nondescript, but nice soundtrack. Some jerks can cause frustration in critical situations and the frequent and sometimes very long loading times require patience. Before the start of the game, before each level, before each sub area and also sometimes it is called "please wait". Here should be improved in the continuation, we definitely want because of the other qualities of the game.
