Nintendo Switch: Responsible for 87 percent of console sales in Japan in 2020 – Gamesaktuell
Despite the next-gen consoles, the Nintendo Switch continues to dominate the sales charts in Japan. According to Famitsu magazine, the Switch was responsible for 87 percent of all console sales in 2020. While the standard model has sold over 3.9 million times, the Nintendo Switch Lite went over 2.0 million times over the counter.
Compared to the previous year, sales have increased by another 30 percent. The best-selling game was Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which sold over 6.37 million copies last year. Animal Crossing has also become a huge success for Nintendo worldwide. The game has sold 26 million times in just six months. The second best-selling game in Japan is Ring Fit Adventure with nearly 1.6 million copies. The pandemic has caused an upswing. The Japanese have spent over $ 3.5 billion on games.
A total of 6.85 million consoles were sold in Japan in 2020. If you subtract the numbers from the Nintendo Switch, there are only just under 950,000 copies from other manufacturers left. Of this, 543,000 units go to the account of the PS4. The PS5, which went on sale in November 2020, has already sold 225,000 times in just a few weeks.
