In contrast to the jet fans of its predecessor, the Playstation 4, the Playstation 5 is usually an astonishingly quiet console. Apart from a few reports of alleged coil whine or spool whistling and the disc drive that revs up to full throttle at regular intervals for no apparent reason, the coveted next-gen machine hardly makes any disturbing noises.
The heat development is just as inconspicuous: at a surface temperature of 20 ° to around 35 ° Celsius, nobody will burn their fingers. Inside the console, however, things look different: A temperature test by the YouTube channel Gamers Nexus shows that individual RAM units of the console can reach up to 95 ° Celsius during operation. That calls for an incredibly complex cooling solution!
Consoles with pre-installed water cooling are still a long way off, but that doesn't prevent hardware enthusiasts from building a solution themselves. In a 13-minute video, the hardware hobbyists from the Modding Café YouTube channel show how they equipped a PS5 with water cooling. To do this, the innards of the console had to be converted into a specially designed housing. Visually, the end result no longer has much in common with the curvy design of the PS5, but the results are still impressive: the inside of the console only warms up to 53.5 ° Celsius.
The Playstation 5 (buy now ) has been on the market in Germany since November 19, 2020 and has been sold out almost continuously since then.
