Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070

Autumn 2020 will be, no: it is already exciting when it comes to graphics cards. Nvidia had already released the GeForce RTX 3080 and 3080 in September. AMD, in turn, will counter this in November with the Radeon RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT. The top model Radeon RX 6900 XT will follow in December – AMD announced these three graphics cards in an online presentation. You can read a summary of this here.

But Nvidia has already sent another graphics card into the race, namely the GeForce RTX 3070, which went on sale on October 29th. In our special we take a closer look at the topics of availability, technology and performance. For the performance, we have statistically summarized several tests by hardware editors in order to determine a good average value for the performance differences to other graphics cards. We put together an overview of more than a dozen tests that had already been published in a news on Wednesday.

RTX 3070 – release and availability

Since Thursday, October 29th, the Founders Edition of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 for 499 euros at Nvidia. Or rather: it was available. Because it is (which was to be expected) sold out for the time being. Custom models of the RTX 3070 are only occasionally available in stores – there are loud ones PC Games hardware price comparison (as of Friday, October 30th, 12 noon) eight models, six of which are available from stock. The cheapest of these six models comes from MSI and costs 589 euros.

We fear that, as with the two top models, there is a demand that Nvidia and the partner manufacturer could not meet – so we must be vigilant here. In the case of the GeForce RTX 3080 and 3090, it looks like that until almost the end of the year only those customers who had already ordered at the release or shortly afterwards will receive a copy. With these two graphics cards and also with the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X, the demand from gamers was compounded by the phenomenon of scalpers – this is what retailers or private individuals who speculate that a product will be short of, and Buy it as soon as it is available for the sole reason to resell it at a significantly higher price. This very often involves brand new products or pre-orders of coveted items. Sometimes bots are used, which act so quickly that normal users who are honestly interested in the product look straight into the tube.
Our author published a column on this topic at the beginning of October. For the GeForce RTX 3070 we hope for a good availability in the next few weeks.

RTX 3070 technology

The technical data of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 were already known when the GeForce RTX 3080 was released – there was a change in one detail: in the test analysis for the GeForce RTX 3080 and 3090, we still had a boost clock of 1730 MHz for the GeForce RTX 3070 specified. We correct this by 5 MHz down to 1725 MHz. The following table shows the technical data of the RTX 3070 and other Nvidia models.

With the GP104, the newest and initially smallest RTX 3000 graphics card uses a different GPU than its big brothers, where the GP102 GPU is used, which offers a good 60 percent more transistors than the GP104. The GeForce RTX 3070 also has to make do with significantly fewer shader units and RT cores (RT = ray tracing) than the two more expensive RTX 3000 graphics cards. The clock rate, which is higher than that of the GeForce RTX 3080 and 3090, compensates for this – but only less than two percent for the boost clock and a good seven percent for the standard clock. When it comes to RAM, if you are concerned about future security, it looks a little tight, just like the GeForce RTX 3080. Because eight gigabytes of RAM for a graphics card, which will probably come close to the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti (more on that in the performance analysis), seem a little sparse to us. By the way, AMD will use 16GB of the Radeon RX 6800, which will be released in November, although the recommended price is 80 euros higher than that of the GeForce RTX 3070.
