Before Half-Life: Alyx appears, let's look back at what has happened in the Half-Life world so far! In our story recap we tell the story Half-Life (Black Mesa), Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode 1 and Half-Life 2: Episode 2 to. On page 1 we are devoted to the game that started it all!
The story of Half-Life 1 begins with Gordon Freeman's arrival at the Black Mesa research base. In the top-secret facility in New Mexico, countless scientists are researching various top-secret projects. As every morning, the 27-year-old theoretical physicist takes the train to his workplace – nothing unusual in itself. However, the fact that the player was actively involved in this journey and not as a cutscene was revolutionary in 1998 and ensured unprecedented immersion in the game world.
While driving, the player will already see some of the sections of Black Mesa in which he will be in the coming game hours. Among other things, two important characters of the Half-Life universe make their first appearance here: Both the mysterious G-Man and the security guard Barney Calhoun can be seen briefly – more on the two later.

Arriving at the abnormal matter laboratory, Gordon slips into his famous orange HEV protective suit and meets some scientists. Among them are Eli Vance and Isaac Kleiner, two researchers who will only play a role much later. He then takes part in an experiment in which the MIT physicist has the difficult task of pushing a pallet truck. The alien crystal reacts with the energy of the reactor and there is a "resonance cascade". This has serious consequences: A portal opens into the alien world "Xen" and all kinds of strange creatures find their way to Black Mesa.
After the experiment failed so badly, Freeman wakes up in the test chamber. Chaos has broken out around him: surrounded by explosions, dead and injured, Gordon makes his way through the devastated laboratories. His physicist colleagues Eli and Isaac commissioned him to fight his way to the surface and get help.

His first encounter with the alien headcrabs (or head crabs) only has to be mastered by Gordon with his crowbar and some support from security guards. The four-legged beings love to sit on people's faces and take over their bodies.
On the way through the research base, Gordon repeatedly joins scientists and security guards, he collects all sorts of weapons and meets various beings from another dimension. The Vortigaunts stand out here, narrow, cyclops-like beings that attack with green energy rays. This species has a special role that will still be relevant in Half-Life 2.
The survivors are also rumored that the military has already come to the aid and is fighting the aliens. Gordon soon realizes that although the Marines' troops aim to eliminate the threat, they accept that all forms of life will be terminated in Black Mesa – including people.

From now on, the cover-up by the military and the alien invaders dominate the game. Gordon tries to find help to get the situation under control. During his odyssey through Black Mesa, Gordon catches a glimpse of the G-Man. The mysterious man in the suit, for his part, seems to be watching Mr. Freeman before there is an actual confrontation, but the G-Man always just adjusts his tie and disappears.
Finally, our protagonist learns of a satellite that has to be launched into space to revise the effects of the resonance cascade. So Gordon goes to the launch pad and manages to ignite the rocket, closing the alien portal on Earth.
Shortly afterwards, our hero is arrested and barely escapes his planned execution by a garbage press. He makes his way through waste disposal and then invades Black Mesa again. He ends up in a secret part of the facility.

In this hidden laboratory, he discovers that alien specimens had been caught and examined in the test chamber long before the accident. Gordon also learns of the Lamba complex at the other end of Black Mesa. The scientists there are said to be the only ones who can stop the invasion. Gordon immediately embarks on the dangerous path there.
When crossing the research facility, it becomes clear how much military is actually being used to push the aliens back: there is bitter fighting everywhere on the site.
Arrived in the Lambda complex, a plan is made how to stop the intruders. The Nihilanth, a powerful creature in Xen, must be killed to close the portal to Earth. For this, Gordon dares the risky journey into the Xen frontier world. It shows the full extent of human expeditions. There are corpses, equipment, and remains of research bases everywhere. It also turns out that the Vortigaunts do not voluntarily fight against humanity. As slaves to Nihilanth, however, they have no choice.
After a few nerve-wracking battles with the local aliens, Gordon finally defeats the Nihilanthen, who had kept the portal open on Xen. The G-Man then addressed Mr. Freeman for the first time and gave him a choice: Either Gordon entered the service of the G-Man or he was expecting "a fight he could not win." Freeman accepts the job offer and is put into stasis.
