SSDs will play a major role in the next generation of consoles. Both the Playstation 5 and the Xbox Series X use the fast storage options. But that could be a problem for PC porting.
The coming generation of game consoles like that Playstation 5 and the Xbox Series X use special SSDs, the speed of which could even exceed that of SSDs on the PC. But that's not really a problem. Rather, conventional hard drives represent a hurdle for future porting to the PC.
SSDs make PC porting of next-gen games problematic?
Even today, complete PCs or laptops with conventional hard drives are delivered. These are significantly slower than SSDs. With previous porting of console games to the PC this was not a problem, because the Playstation 4 and the Xbox One use a regular hard drive as standard.
The next generation like PS5 and Xbox Series X will rely on SSDs. This should not only eliminate loading times, it is also possible to open larger worlds with more details but less loading times. And that could be problematic when it comes to PC porting. Developers usually follow the standards of the consoles for new games, because a new title has to run very well on a console. If huge open game worlds are now being developed because the consoles allow this through SSD technology, PC porting could be a hurdle due to the still widespread hard disk technology. How should the games that are specifically designed to run well on an SSD be ported to PCs with regular, slow hard drives?
We will probably see more "SSD" as system requirements in the future. And regular hard drives could slowly but surely disappear from the scene in the coming years. Especially in gaming PCs, SSDs are mostly common hardware anyway.
