The Saints are back! This time, however, without Shaundi, Pierce or fan favorite Johnny Gat and after Steelport or Stilwater it is no longer possible. The developers Volition decided to do a complete reboot of the crazy gangster series. For us that means: New location, new engine and new heroes, but still a lot of action and nonsense. We were able to convince ourselves of this in a presentation, after which the developers answered a few questions.

Volition’s Jim Boone tells us that not only did his team feel like restarting the series, they were forced to do it a little. You noticed for yourself that the fourth part was so wacky that it was impossible to top it. So it was decided within the team to focus more on the things that made Saints Row before the series got crazier from part to part. With the reboot, Volition wants to focus more on building a criminal syndicate again. The stories of the well-known characters have now also been told, so that a decision was made for new characters who now embody the Saints.

The Saints team now consists of Eli, a nerd who doesn’t really match the other gangsters in terms of looks, but who has a good knack for planning robberies. He is supported by the driver Neenah and DJ Kevin, who is a real adrenaline junkie and who enjoys getting into any dangerous situation. Of course, the boss of this gang is again the player. As is typical of the Saints Row series, you can again choose from numerous customization options in order to design your gangster boss.

Volition didn’t reveal any details yet, but showed us a few options. We were presented with some fairly normal-looking potential villains, but also weird creations such as the silver giant, which was very reminiscent of Colossus from the X-Men. The goal is of course not to look particularly pretty or hammered, but to recruit more criminals, fight the competition, grab as much coal as possible and ultimately rule over the entire city.

As we mentioned at the beginning, the new Saints don’t end up in one of the old locations in the northeastern United States. Instead, it goes down to the southwest in the fictional city of Santo Ileso. The city includes regions that are very reminiscent of parts of the states of Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada. We have already been shown short scenes of a border section in the desert, a residential area, a casino district and the financial district, in which, of course, there are lots of skyscrapers.

According to Volition, Santo Ileso consists of a total of nine different districts, all of which should differ visually, but also playfully. While the desert is ideal for car chases, for example, in the financial district you can jump off the skyscrapers with a parachute. In any case, the developers promise the most varied and largest open game world in series history.

The different regions of Santo Ileso should provide variety. Here the Saints are stealing a money transporter in the casino district.

On top of that, the reboot should also be by far the prettiest part, because a new engine was finally developed for the new Saints Row. With the material shown so far, our jaws didn’t necessarily go down, but we really like the general look of the title.

In addition, the Saints Row series isn’t known for being particularly pretty, but simply stands for crazy gangster action. You can even experience it together with a friend in online co-op when the game is released on February 25, 2022 for PC (Epic-exclusive) as well as Playstation and Xbox consoles. It works very simply using the drop-in-drop-out procedure. Even better: The co-op mode even works across generations. PS4 players are allowed to play with PS5 players and Xbox One with series owners.

Of course there is a lot of shooting again. We are excited to see how the shootouts will play out.

Maybe a little support is not so bad after all, because three competing gangs have spread out in Santo Ileso. The Los Panteros are quite the ruffians who like to harass their opponents in close combat. The Marshall Defense, on the other hand, prefers high-tech weapons, while the Idols are kind of hipster anarchists who cause chaos everywhere. Since the different districts of the city are divided among these gangs, one must of course conquer their territories in order to turn the Saints into a real criminal syndicate.

If you have conquered enemy bases and chased away the competition, you can build Saints factories in certain places. These concerns about money, influence, new gang members and of course side missions and activities. According to Volition, there should be some new employment opportunities, but old hits are also back on board. For example, if you decide to build a dummy clinic, you can play the popular insurance fraud mini-game again. Saints fans remember: Here you should be run over as spectacularly as possible.

Other building options that expand the Saints empire include a fast-food restaurant where drugs are sold instead of burgers, a gun-slide shelter disguised as a workshop, or a toxic waste dump. The nice thing about it is that you can freely decide where to build which company. If one is of the opinion, for example, that the bigwigs in the villa district could use a toxic waste store in the neighborhood, then this project can also be put into practice.

The new Saints Row is a little more grounded than parts 3 and 4, but the series reboot also stands for fat and over-the-top action.

The basic gameplay of Saints Row should of course not differ too much from the other games in the series. Open game world, main missions, sidequests, crazy side activities – everything is back on board. So it’s no surprise that the foundation of the new Saints Row continues to be gunfights, car chases, and over-the-top action. Volition named three role models. When it comes to fighting and violence, they followed the John Wick films. The vehicle missions, on the other hand, were inspired by Baby Driver and the over-the-top action by the Fast & Furious spin-off Hobbs & Shaw.

We weren’t shown too much of the shootings, but we could already discover all sorts of wild action in the trailer that was shown to us at the beginning. Among other things, the Saints flee over a roof in a convertible because some villains are on their heels. Finally, a rocket launcher ensures peace and quiet. The developers also went into greater detail on the vehicle control system.

Volition says the handling of the vehicle has been greatly improved and of course it is still possible to shoot out of the car at full speed. However, the developers assured us that the fighting in vehicles had been greatly improved. You should really be able to use cars as weapons. However, they have not yet gone into any more detail.

Since the developers have already revealed that you can unlock different skills and perks again during the course of the game, we assume that we can use some crazy skills both on foot and in the car seat.

Is Saints Row going to be a good game now? Of course, after the presentation and the discussion with the developers, we can’t say that exactly. But it seems like the folks at Volition are aware of what fans expect from a Saints Row, and also what things had to be done to bring the series into the modern age. After the presentation of the game, we really feel like conquering a city with a new line of Saints and converting it into a gangster paradise.
