Sequel could come despite Avowed

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire was not a success. Obsidian Entertainment even had to think about what the future of the game series could look like and recently announced with Avowed an RPG that is set in the same world, but that is changing gameplay considerably.

The developers must be in the mood for PoE 3

In contrast to an iso view like in Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2, you play Avowed from the first person perspective (possibly with an option on 3rd person view). Avowed becomes more of a Skyrim rather than Baldur's Gate, which the PoE games took as inspiration.

Fans of the two PoE games feared that there will never be a Pillars of Eternity 3 again. But that need not be. "I don't think fans have to convince me / Obsidian / MS of anything. Their support is always heard and appreciated. I think we have to believe that if we try to make a game in this style again, that existing fans will enjoy it, new players will enjoy it, and ex-fans disappointed with PoE 1 and / or 2 will come back, and we have to look forward to developing it, "said Game Director Josh Sawyer .

Josh Sawyer explained that the failure of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire (buy now) led to a kind of burnout among the developers. It is therefore important that the team is really looking forward to developing another game in this direction before starting to implement it.

"Even developers who really enjoy working in the Pillars universe were burned out after the end of Deadfire, especially if they continued to work on the DLCs. If you invest all this work and just limp the game across the finish line in terms of sales, that's a lot of trouble people don’t start pouncing on a sequel, ”Josh Sawyer added.

So it could be that we will get a Pillars of Eternity 3 sometime in the future. But only if the developers really feel like it.
