Now it's time to catch your breath: out with Byleth Fire Emblem: Three Houses is the fifth and last download fighters from the first DLC wave For Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (buy now) published. It will only be sometime in the course of the current year with the second DLC pack which will bring us six new figures this time by the end of 2021. However, this small finale is only celebrated by a few Smash fans, because unlike the four warriors before Byleth, who are all surprising guest stars from third-party manufacturer series, the current newcomer comes from Nintendo itself and is a rather unspectacular choice.

In addition, Fire Emblem with nine figures is one of the most extensively represented brands in the game. So many players are pretty upset about the new warriors and they won't be disappointed. In practice, the developers have done a great job at Byleth again and, for comparatively little money, deliver a varied fighter, an interesting stage and the usual additional content that you are used to with the previous DLC updates.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: The Nintendo beater in the test video

Byleth's Ultra Smash calls Sothis to his / her side and hits everything that is within range at the time of activation with a devastating sword strike.

So what's in it? First of all, of course, Byleth herself, of course, depending on the template, either in a female or male version and each with their own language samples. The selection is regulated by the different costumes, so we can go into battle with four different variants of the duo. Byleth does not have a gimmick that distinguishes him / her, as the last DLC fighters brought with them, e.g. the special attack menu of the Heroes from Dragon Quest. Joker's Persona and Banjo & Kazooies Invulnerability attack that cannot be used infinitely often. However, she / he is a well-designed figure that attacks either with a sword, bow and arrow, an ax or a kind of spear, depending on the type and direction of attack.

The stage is customarily designed to be extremely detailed and true to the template. Various fire emblem figures can be found in the background.

In addition, she / he has a long gripping hook with which he / she can draw enemies from a great distance to himself or can transport himself back to the combat platform from seemingly hopeless situations. As a small specialty, Byleth can change direction while performing some of her charged attacks and drop down through permeable platforms to respond to enemy actions. And last but not least, your Ultra Smash really hits the mark. You have to be relatively close to an opponent to be caught by them, but together with Sothis from Three Houses you do a devastating blow, in which the unfortunate victims have nothing to laugh about! Of course, the figure has many other subtleties and it fits well into the varied grid of the fun beater.

In classic mode we only compete against other fire emblem figures. According to the strategy template, Stamina battles are fought.

The new stage was also a success. We hit each other in different places within the Garreg Mach monastery, whereby we are transported from one location to the next in the best Smash Bros. manner with a flying platform. Funny elements such as destructible level side parts provide variety, but basically it is a classic fight on stage. The attention to detail, i.e. how perfectly the template from the game is mapped, is once again unique. And in the background some of the well-known figures from Three Houses like Edelgard and Rhea are waiting for us – nice! As before, duels against fighters on stages and in situations that represent figures from the template await us on the fifth and for the time being final DLC ghost board. It has lost none of its creative charm! In Classic Mode, we can fight Byleth through a new campaign in which he / she only competes in stamina matches against the other Fire Emblem warriors. The finale is a somewhat chaotic but fun mass battle against the master and crazy hand.

Aside from all the fray, eleven new pieces of music are waiting for us in the music player. Unlike the previous DLC fighters, there are logically not entirely fresh pieces to marvel at. Instead, the existing Fire Emblem playlist is complemented by well-composed and fitting, but in some cases, somewhat familiar-sounding songs. If you are willing to spend a little money in addition to the price of the Byleth package or the Fighters Pass, you will also receive various Mii costumes in detail for 80 cents each Altair's robe from Assassin's Creed, a Rabbid suit, two Mega-Man variants (X and .exe) and one Cuphead outfit, Cool: As with Sans Undertale A piece of music is included in the price at Cuphead.

My opinion

With the last fighter you walk on safe paths, but deliver the usual quality.

Would I personally have wished for Byleth as the final DC master? No, definitely not. Firstly, I'm not too familiar with Fire Emblem anyway, and secondly, the series is now overrepresented with nine out of almost 80 characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. However, the four download fighters before were all so surprising that I cannot and do not want to share the great annoyance of being on the safe side at the end of the first DLC wave that is currently breaking through the developers. And as for the design, the attention to detail regarding the references to the template and the playful quality of Byleth, there is nothing to complain about as usual – here the highest quality is delivered! So, and now in the second DLC package I hope for my dream fighter Tetrisblock.
