Update: Sonic the Hedgehog was a complete success at the box office, which is why a sequel has now been confirmed! Original: After the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog, the cards initially looked bad for the blue hedgehog, but the theatrical release was more than successful: the video game adaptation has set a new record at the box office and surpasses master detective Pikachu.
Update from May 29, 2020: Overall, Sonic the Hedgehog has not gotten to the end result of Pokémon: master detective Pikachu, but the blue hedgehog doesn't need to hide: worldwide, the video game adaptation at the box office has raised over $ 300 million. This success not only makes a sequel probable, it has now also been officially confirmed: those responsible at Paramount Pictures have the good news to Variety revealed. Jeff Fowler is said to be the director of the sequel, while Pat Casey and Josh Miller are responsible for the script.
The film is still in the development phase and a start of production has not yet been found due to the Covid 19 pandemic.
Original from February 17, 2020: During the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog (buy now for € 15.99) the blue hedgehog was really impressive after a complete redesign. This revision seems to have paid off at the theatrical release: Sonic the Hedghehog is the new king of game adaptation – if you look at the result at the box office for the release.
Sonic beats master detective Pikachu at the box office
While Pokémon: master detective Pikachu, the former record holder in the USA, "only" raised $ 54.3 million on his first weekend (more precisely: the first three days), Sonic was able to collect $ 57 million. Forecasts even go as far as 68 million in the first four days. It should also be borne in mind that January and February are usually not very busy months for cinemas. Rather, the films end up here that are hardly trusted by the studio anyway. Pikachu appeared in contrast in May, where the visitor numbers are much better.

If you look at Sonic's worldwide audience figures, you already get $ 100 million – so the film is almost certain to be a box office hit, because it has already brought its production budget back in. Due to marketing and redesign costs, the film has to reach at least 200 million to be worth it.
Why is Sonic so popular?
Now the question naturally arises: why is Sonic such a success? There is no clear explanation for this, but there are some theories. In the USA, for example, the film enjoyed ideal starting conditions thanks to the "The Presidents Day" weekend – parents wanted to take their children to the cinema, there were hardly any other films that would have competed in this regard. Sonic is and remains a well-known name that resonates with young and old. Jim Carrey in the role of the funny villain probably won't hurt either.
Or was it ultimately the graphic redesign that saved the film? What do you all mean? Did you see the movie Will you still look at him Write to us in the comments!
