On Sunday, the record for the most expensive video game of all time was broken again. It was an original boxed copy of Super Mario 64 from 1996. An auction at Heritage Auctions brought in a record $ 1.56 million for the classic. This almost doubled the previous record.

Curiously, this was only set up two days earlier. A copy of The Legend of Zelda (NES) went on sale last Friday for $ 870,000. The significantly higher sum for Super Mario 64 is likely to be related to the grading, among other things. The N64 game received a total of 9.8 out of 10 points and was thus virtually brand-new. In the case of The Legend of Zelda, the packaging was rated with a score of 9.0. Why, of all things, the prices for the classics of the time are skyrocketing remains unclear at the moment.

A year ago today, the record was $ 114,000 for a copy of Super Mario Bros. It wasn’t until April 2021 that another copy of the same game was auctioned for $ 660,000.
