With Marvel's Avengers, the next big blockbuster from the incredibly successful comic company finally appears, this time not on the big screen, but in the video game medium, which has been neglected up to now. Of course there is a large selection of games that are based on the huge superhero universe, but there are only a few really great masterpieces. The countless Lego offshoots, the sobering Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series or the half-baked Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite … aside from the fantastic PS4-exclusive Spider-Man and a few exceptions, fans have to be content with films and comics. That should finally change with Marvel's Avengers, because the ambitious action adventure is one of the biggest game releases of the year.
Only one problem, the previous coverage of the new game from Crystal Dynamics was mixed, to say the least. Instead of a full-fledged single-player game, the studio presented a title at E3 2019 that seemed to focus more on loot knockouts from the games-as-a-service area. Since then, the press (including us!) And fans have had a noticeably difficult time correctly assessing the potential of Marvel's Avengers. A game that would like to captivate the screen for over 100 hours logically requires a large amount and a lot of playing time. We have therefore decided on a long-term test, which will be expanded with regular updates over the next week. However, we have already completed the surprisingly successful campaign and so there is an initial conclusion on our part – without evaluation, it will be added at a later point in time.
The dramatic events of A-Day

Although the plot of Marvel's Avengers offers – as you would expect from the name – a large stage for the members of the most famous and popular hero troops in the world (Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow and Hulk), the core is the Pakistani-American Teenage girl Kamala Khan, better known by her hero pseudonym Ms. Marvel. At the beginning we accompany the young teenage girl Kamala, a HUGE Avengers fan, with her father on the so-called Avengers-Day, a big convention in San Francisco. To coincide with the launch of the helicarrier, there will be an impressive ceremony in honor of the iconic troop. As Kamala, we can win comics in various mini-games and even have multiple chances to meet our great role models in person. Kamala successfully sits down against a couple

Defend uncouth teenagers (with words) and shortly afterwards are praised by none other than Steve Rogers for their courage, then the fan service is top notch. In addition, such quiet moments help enormously in giving the later events emotional impact and meaning. In general, it is a great trump card of action adventure that a lot of time is often taken for moments apart from action and drama.

a catastrophic gas explosion, the death of Avengers head Steve Rogers and hundreds of innocents, and the end of the Avengers. Those are blamed for the dramatic events and disappear without a trace. From now on, the technology company AIM takes on the role of Avengers and slowly takes control of society and politics. Due to the violent gas explosion, many victims also turn into so-called inhumans and acquire supernatural abilities. The action adventure story is really gaining momentum five years after the events of A-Day. Kamala finds secret evidence that a trap has been set for the Avengers and uncovers the real machinations of the AIM company. The head of the company is chief villain Dr. George Tarleton, who mutates into the famous Marvel antagonist MODOK (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing). Kamala then pursues the difficult task of reuniting the individual members of the Avengers and putting AIM down.
Worthy of the epic Avengers

The young teenager's project turns out to be far more difficult than expected. The Avengers have not only disbanded, but also fought violently, tearing seemingly insurmountable ravines in the former team. Kamala's first point of contact is Bruce Banner, who has spent the many years as the Hulk since A-Day and is still mourning the tragic death of his friend Steve. The young Kamala tries with a lot of passion to build relationships with the individual members and to smooth out old waves. Rather, we don't want to go into the course of the story, as the story is clearly the big trump card of the action adventure.

The ten to twelve hour campaign, written by Shaun Escayg (in charge of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy), shines with an impressive and gripping staging, lots of epic and dramatic moments in the style of big single-player titles like Tomb Raider or Uncharted. It is also praiseworthy how sensitive the team has put a lot of fan service into history. Every now and then you come across famous characters from the comics, but also many allusions and Easter Eggs, which probably only waterproof comic fans will decipher.
A heart for Kamala Khan

The beating heart of Marvel's Avengers (buy now ) is clearly Kamala, which is not only wonderfully written, but was also fantastically set to music in English by actress Sandra Saad. The young heroine has wit, charm and presents herself with an extremely realistic portrayal of a young teenage girl, who greatly helps to give the story the necessary emotional fullness. The big moments are often the little things in the everyday life of the heroine. When Kamala designs her first superhero costume and stands in front of the mirror unsteady because she thinks she looks ridiculous. Then your heart opens when Tony Stark persuades her that everyone looks ridiculous in their outfits. "Have you seen Thor once ?!" From the eyes of the teenage girl, we experience grippingly and intensely how Kamala gradually grows from an insecure teenager to a new heroine. Their insecurity, their self-doubt and realistic overestimation are pleasantly human – one of the great strengths of Marvel, whether in the comics, in the films or, from now on, hopefully also in video games. In addition, it is extremely pleasant and satisfying that her Muslim roots are always part of the conversations and actions. Even in 2020, this is still very unusual in the AAA market and therefore gives action-adventure a pleasant breath of fresh air
Six superhero games in one ?!

In the gameplay area, the verdict is more mixed. On the one hand, we really like the fact that in Marvel's Avengers we sometimes have the feeling that we are being presented several games at once. A mission with Black Widow through a secret AIM base that grants us, even if only pretended, a stealth operation? The explosive flight with Iron Man through canyons and mountains fighting AIM guns, while Jarvis puts on the right rock 'n roll? Marvel's Avengers offers a lot of variety on paper and presents a large skill system with different gameplay for each of the six playable characters. At the beginning it can hold on well, but after a few hours the monotony sets in. The hose levels are often enormously uncreative and simply require us to clear hordes of opponents out of the way and Crystal Dynamics rarely surprises with fresh approaches to the game.
The monotony could be the big problem of the action adventure. Aside from the campaign, a multitude of war zone missions (extensive missions), drop zones (short missions), hero missions (non-creative special missions) and HARM challenges (training sessions in a holographic training room) await us. Not only do they always fall back on the same areas from the campaign, the opponents also repeat themselves as if on an assembly line. Instead of doing a fresh mission, we fight over and over again against the task master on the Golden Gate Bridge to grind for more loot. That would perhaps also work with regard to long-term motivation, but there are two serious problems: 1. The loot, which focuses purely on values, is not enough motivating for such grind deposits. 2. Although we always unlock new skills and combos for our characters, the gameplay lacks precision to bind us in the long term. The opponent types often act questionably and the eternal thunderstorm on the screen messes up the overview enormously.
Visually and aurally there is hardly any reason to complain

Regardless of whether the sharp graphics, which are particularly convincing in the area of lighting effects, the strong and multi-layered soundtrack by Bobby Tahouri (Rise of the Tomb Raider) or the very realistic animations of the many characters, Marvel's Avengers can absolutely convince technically. So far, whether in multiplayer or single player, we have not had any serious technical problems or failures. Only certain sound effects tore us out of the flow of the game every now and then. The attacks of Iron Man or Thor's Hammer Mjölnir could sound a bit more imposing and powerful. But that's grumbling at a high level. When setting the score, we recommend enjoying the adventure in English. The de

Unfortunately, utschen setting does not even begin to capture the charm of the characters as is the case in the original. Often times, a lot of jokes get lost in translation, especially with Tony, Thor and Kamala.
Our game impressions are not enough for a final conclusion, but what we can say: Marvel's Avengers presents a fantastic campaign with great attention to detail. Apart from the story, the action adventure gets lost a little too much in monotonous loot beating. But Marvel's Avengers is a Games-as-a-Service title, so there will be a lot of work to be done on the game in the future and players can also look forward to free post-launch content such as new characters (Hawkeye, Spider-Man (only on PS4 ), etc.), missions and environments. If you are a Marvel fan, you cannot avoid the new Crystal Dynamics game, everyone else should weigh up whether a twelve to fifteen hour campaign is worth a full price title to them and how much they would like to play long-term games like Destiny , The Division or Anthem.
Marvel's Avengers will be released on September 4th, 2020 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. If you want to find out more about the game, Maci goes into more detail on the action adventure in the brand new issue 629 of Games Aktuell Podcats. More updates within this article will follow early next week.

For this reason we turn to you now. You can support us as a PC Games supporter so that we can continue to offer our content in the usual form free of charge without introducing a paywall or publishing clickbait news like "And you won't believe what happened next …" .
