Valve's level designer Dario Casali explains why Half-Life 2: Episode 3 never appeared. Over time, a feature creep developed that grew over the team's head.

Half-Life 2: Episode 3 never appeared. Why, Valves level designer Dario Casali explained in an interview.

The developers wanted too much

There were six years between Half-Life and Half-Life 2. Valve found this too long, according to Dario Casali. People didn't want to keep fans waiting so long for replenishments. Therefore, the team decided to tell the story in episode form instead of a completely new game. It worked quite well with the first episode, but then the developers always wanted more.

"We crawled more and more in a direction that we said," Well, let's just put more and more and more things into this game because we want to make it as good as possible. "But then we realized that these episodes would become more and more full sequels. " Even episode 2 grew well beyond what was planned for it. When developers of Episode 1 had to help release Episode 2, the team realized that the planned concept simply couldn't be implemented well, so Episode 3 was never released.

Valve also never wanted to just release a new half-life just to make money with it. Another part should always bring new technologies forward. There were a lot of ideas and projects, but at some point they were discontinued because they simply could not meet the requirements. In addition, the development of the Source 2 engine sparked in between and, according to Dario Casali, it is never a good idea to develop a game and a new engine at the same time. But with Half-Life: Alyx has now reached a turning point and this could lead to more games in the row.
