The 10 best mods and how you install them

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is still one of the best role-playing games ever released for PC and consoles. Unfortunately, the game is already five years old – and although it has aged fairly well, a look at the current mod box may be worthwhile. What do you all mean? Here are the best The Witcher 3 mods in 2020 and how to install them on your PC.

You play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for the 126th time and just needs a different world so as not to bore you? Or are you an (almost) complete one? Newcomers to the franchisewho after banging from The Witcher on Netflix wants to stroll further through the world of witches? Either way, we recommend that you let your hungry glances wander over the possible mods for the game. Of course they work all only on the PC, and range from smaller amenities to complete overhauls that give the game a completely different taste. All the wonderful mods in this list come from the site nexusmods, By the way: one Multiplayer Mod don't exist until today, so you still have to do without multiplayer.

In advance: For the correct management of the mods

If you want to install a single, perfect mod in your game, forget all the managers: just download it and you're done. However, if you are interested in several – I assume that you are – then you need a few helping hands in the form of programs that will change your mod life from terrible and miserable to rainbow-wonderful. I speak from experience.

Nexus Mod Manager / Vortex / The Witcher 3 Mod Manager

Putting multiple mods in one game can be exhausting. Depending on which mods you use and how many there are, you will probably not get off lightly and load your game with a few (or very many) bugs. That happens above all when several mods in conflict devices, or may not be properly implemented in the game. You avoid a lot of trouble if you have one Manager used, something like the holy grail of mod users. Here you are made aware of errors, can easily switch mods on and off and may determine in which order they are loaded into the game.

Here are three major mod managersall of which have their advantages and disadvantages:

  • Vortex
    • Latest Mod Manager from Nexus Mods (recommended)
  • Nexus Mod Manager (Download below on the vortex page)
    • Has not been serviced for over a year – no recommendation, just try it in an emergency
  • The Witcher 3 Mod Manager
    • A mod manager created by the community
    • Should be better than vortex, but not suitable for beginners

Mod Merger

If you installed too many mods, you could Mod limit to reach. Yeah, there is – but with the Mod Merger you should be able to avoid it. The program can have several Combine mods into a bundleso it’s just considered a big mod.

Debug Console Enabler

And finally, the Debug Console Enabler. This program opens the door to the debug console in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. What is that? You can use the console to enter console commands, for example to activate God mode, spawn enemies or try out all sorts of other things. In particular, it helps you filter bugs from the mods.

The Witcher 3: the 10 best mods in 2020

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has been walking among us for a while; it is, so to speak, a mid-50s (counted in video game years, counting ten times each year) who has held up amazingly well. He also gave his fans and the mod community enough time to create a whole smorgasbord of modifications, overhauls, bug fixes and new content for the game. The whole thing is not as crazy as in Skyrim, but there are quite a few. Therefore I will try to cover all possible genres of mods. On the Nexus page for all The Witcher 3 mods you can rummage around in the meantime if you need more or if the right one is not here for you.

Immersion & Gameplay – FCR3

FCR3 is one of the best mods simply because it is from one Developer from the CD Projekt Red team comes. There has never been an official patch like this, but these several small changes to the game and gameplay would no doubt have earned the official stamp from the developer. FCR3 tries to change everything about The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt a bit – but never so that the feeling of the game is lost. All in all, you could safely say it does the whole thing a little heavier but more immersive,

A few excerpts from the Contents of the mod

  • NPCs now respond when you steal (but not all, and almost no one attacks you for that)
  • Even small heights that you fall hurt
  • Less loot in houses (not opponents) – you can sell your things for a higher value
  • More money on quests if it makes sense
  • Bug fixes

To install: You can install this mod in the middle of the game, so you don't have to start over. As long as you haven't integrated any other gameplay mods, everything should go smoothly. If that is the case, use Vortex in any case and try whether it works. A few mod orders are also on the official FCR3 site,

gameplay: Increased Creature Loot

More loot may not be what The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt needs. At least as far as stealing in houses is concerned and the many items that are lying around and that Geralt can apparently accommodate everyone in his two pockets. If you are craving for more immersion, mods are certainly good that will not overload you so much. But what about creatures or dead NPCs? They could use a little more. With Increased Creature Loot So that's exactly what happens: mobs and others have more or at least always something with it. There are several versions of the modthat you can read on the mod page.

To install: You can also install this mod in the middle of the game. Vortex should take care of everything. If you installed it manually, download the zip file and extract the file "mod_ICL“In the mod folder of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: … Steam The Witcher 3 Mods or … GOG The Witcher 3 Mods, If the folder is not there, you can simply create it.

Graphics / Realism: The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project

There are several graphic mods for The Witcher 3; the Reworked Project, however, is not only dedicated to certain textures, but, uh, all? The entire world of The Witcher 3 is more detailed, from house walls, snow, grasses to armor and items. The modder adhered fully to the original game; So everything is not suddenly more colorful or looks completely different. For a higher level of realism, I definitely recommend this version, especially since there is simply no official HD remake of the game yet.

installation: With the mod you download an installer that regulates everything for you. There is more information on the page under the download link.

Graphics / Realism: Realistic Weather

Dear sorcerer, if you are immediately afraid that The Witcher 3 is ONLY foggy with this mod – don't worry: Realistic Weather changes the bad weather in the regions, depending on your location, it may rain or snow (Skellige) , or just can be foggy. Any bad weather front will look more realistic with this mod and may give you the feeling that you have to report to yourself. By the way: If you prefer The Witcher 3 to be more fairytale – here’s the graphic mod Fantasy.

installation: For realistic weather the DLC Blood and Wine be installed. Otherwise use Vortex or unzip the zip file into your The Witcher folder. Important: "DlcEnabled_dlc_realweather = 1"Must be in"… Document The Witcher 3 user.settings under " stand. As always, there’s more information on the download page.

Graphics: MORE BLOOD

Do you remember Dragon Age: Origins and your characters when they slaughtered someone? From now on you can also bathe in blood in The Witcher 3 if you install this mod: heads fly, the blood bubbles from corpses and every time you use your sword there are a few red party fountains. If you want to increase the level of violence in the game a little, this is your mod.

installation: You can only install this mod if you log in to Nexus and unlock adult content.

Gameplay: Magic Spells for Signs and Weapons

Huge fireballs, hurricanes, frost bubbles and much more await you in this magician mod: With Magic Spells for Signs and Weapons, a number of magical items come into play, which you can either buy from retailers or via the console command "Witchermage“Can activate. Each of these items transforms your characters (Igni, Aard, Quen, Yrden, Axii) into different spells, which you can then use as usual. With several items, there are a number of magic sets waiting for you, which you can exchange as you wish. Just read the notes on the mod page to find out more.

installation: It is recommended that this mod no mod manager to use (so no vortex or similar). In order to manually implement the content into the game, download the zip file and extract the folder "dlc" such as "mod“In your The Witcher 3 folder. If you use other mods, the Mod Merger will help you.

Graphics: Henry Cavill and Anya Chalotra

Ay, are you bothered by the fact that the Geralt from the game doesn't look like the one from The Witcher series on Netflix? Then don't give up, because with this mod you get Henry Cavill (Geralt) and Anya Chalotra (Yennefer) modded into the game, so that you can continue to fully live out their love story. Get this right away Retexture package from Shadowphonic to make Geralt look a little older and, uhm, better. Both mods work together, but of course the original mod works without the retexture package.

installation: Load up first Henry Cavill and Anya Chalotra down. You unzip the file "modGeraltisCavill" and the equivalent for Yennefer into your game folder, but for Geralt you need Hearts of Stone. If everything works, you get yourself Game Lore Henry Cavill Retexture, unpack the contents in the mod folder and use the mod manager to check that they are higher in the load order than the original mod.

Gameplay: Fast Travel from Anywhere

Without mods, you always have to be close to a signpost to use the fast travel. Fast Travel Anywhere, on the other hand, allows you to teleport to a signpost from any point on the map. But be careful: In the middle of quests or fights, your game could crash if you travel to a signpost.

installation: Download the mod with Vortex or extract the file "modFastTravelAnywhere“From the zip file to the folder … The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Mods, If mods does not exist yet, just create the folder.

Overhaul: Ghost Mod

We come to the larger and – a little – more complicated mods: Overhauls. Well, overhauls basically just mean that those mods change many, many, many small or big things and revise the whole game. Some overhauls change the game completely; others like that Ghost Mod however, try to stick to the original and just do it fundamentally better. A few Mod details (far from all):

  • Revision of the combat system
  • Many in-game texts have been improved to be more accurate (In English! You should play the whole game in English if you use this mod – otherwise there is a mix of German and English).
  • Almost all alchemy recipes have been revised to make them more realistic and differentiated
  • All items weigh a little
  • Realistic Loot: You will no longer find ultra rare items in poor houses
  • You can create your very own difficulty mode

installation: First of all you need two community patches for the mod, namely Community Patch – Base and Community Patch – Shared Imports, When you're done, you should use The Witcher 3 Mod Manager. If you don't want that, there is a manual on the mod page. additional: With this mod you should have a complete start new game, Used no other overhaul mods, Also use the Script Mergerto avoid conflicts with other mods.

Overhaul: Witcher 3 – Enhanced Edition

You don't like The Witcher 3's combat system? PERFECT! Because then you should definitely check them out Enhanced Edition get to the game – which is a mod by the way, and not an official version of the game. Enhanced Edition fundamentally overhauls the combat system – and basically changes everything about it. In the video you can see the result, even if it hardly summarizes what the Enhanced Edition does with the game: There is no automatic target acquisition more, instead Geralt does exactly what you tell him. There are new attacks; new ways to parry – for Geralt as well as for your opponents. You can get hurt in combat and if your life falls below 30 percent you start limping. All in all, you will have to relearn this combat system, but once you have done that, you should have a lot more fun with the game. The Enhanced Edition makes the combat system more differentiated, more realistic, a little heavier – and more immersive. If you have one Touch Dark Souls in the game wishes: This mod is for you.

installation: First of all you have to Mod limit adjuster to install. Then unzip all three folders from the downloaded zip file into your The Witcher 3 folder. Now overwrite the "input.settings" file in your documents with the "input.settings" file from the zip folder. If that doesn't work, have a look at the mod page and read the other ways to install it. Important tips / details:

  • At the first Start of the game after installing the mod a window with the name "RED engine 3" will appear
    • Restarts the game until the "RED engine 3" window no longer appears
  • Only with one new score, without exception (no New Game +)
  • Playable in English only
  • Have the best no mods installed before – start with this and then work your way slowly
  • Further information on complications on the Mod

We introduce you to the history of the witcher – without spoilers and made with love:

I have in this list NOT paid attention to whether all these mods work together. Certainly a few, but you have to test and find out for yourself. Games with the right mods can be one whole new gaming experience offer and give you the chance to enjoy a game double or triple. Still, installing mods is always a bit of a hassle, as there are usually a few minor or major issues. tip: Starts the game after each installed mod and looks if the individual mods work.
