As Druckmann explains in the interview, there were plans to include Joel's former girlfriend in the game. So there were considerations of several cutscenes, in which this girlfriend named Esther would have had an appearance. Some concepts had provided for a scene where Joel and Ellie paid her a visit. Also interesting: The emotional dance scene with Ellie and Dina was planned as a playable section in the course of development. The team experimented with some interaction options during the dance to achieve a more intense effect. Ultimately, however, the team decided against this approach and reduced the section to a few cutscenes as seen in the finished game.
Naughty Dog also thought about presenting the section with the Seraphites or "Scars" a little differently. In the release version of The Last of Us Part 2 (buy now for € 54.99) you experience this part of the game from the perspective of Abby. However, there were considerations to also confront Ellie with these fanatics.
