The new generation of consoles as an opportunity for old brands

AT LAST! This word was particularly common after the Xbox Showcase on July 23, 2020. Why? On this day Microsoft announced the next part of the role-playing game series Fable. For almost ten years fans have been waiting for the series to continue. The last offshoot Fable 3 was released on October 26, 2010 for Xbox 360 and on May 19, 2011 for the PC.

For years there have been rumors about a possible successor, but in the end the Xbox One comes away empty-handed when it comes to fable. As little is known about the fourth fable so far, it is certain that it will be released for Xbox Series X and PC.

Fable shows where the journey for the next generation of consoles could go: Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X could be a new chance for apparently obsolete game franchises. In this article, we would like to explore some series and brands that should have long since deserved a sequel or a reboot.

Splinter Cell
It starts with Ubisoft's stealth series Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell. At this point we refrain from saying "Play it again, Sam", although it would have been an excellent fit in this context. After all, Special Agent Sam Fisher last went on the hunt for criminals in Splinter Cell: Blacklist in 2013.

With his realistic stealth approach, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell hit the bull's eye! We look back in the retrospecial plus video.

Since then, rumors have been circulating on the net about a possible continuation of the series. At the end of 2017 it was even announced that Ubisoft should work on the eighth part. And in the run-up to E3 2019, it was said that Ubisoft could present the new offshoot. But nothing! Instead, Sam Fisher appeared again and again in other Ubisoft games such as Ghost Recon: Wildlands (2017) or the mobile title Tom Clancy's Elite Squad, which will be released on August 27, 2020. He is also allowed to go back to the field as a new operator in the strategy shooter Rainbow Six: Siege.

Splinter Cell in particular could benefit massively from some of the functions of the next generation of consoles: In particular, the play of light and shadow was always the focus of the stealth action game. HDR color depth and 4K graphic resolution certainly open up new possibilities in this sector.

Prince of Persia

Speaking of Ubisoft: A sequel to Prince of Persia seems to be just a matter of time in this context. We are waiting ten years after Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Times for a confirmation of the sixth major series offshoot. The signs for a possible continuation or even a reboot of the original have intensified in the recent past. Need some examples? In June, gameplay videos of the never-released Prince of Persia: Redemption appeared on YouTube. In addition, there were repeated reports on Reddit about an offshoot for the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X. One thing is certain: Prince of Persia is ripe for a return to the big stage! We want to climb along walls again, fight swords, manipulate time and solve tricky environmental puzzles.

Also popular with PC games readers Prince of Persia wasn't a quick game. Those who didn't know the levels and still hurried from one screen to the next ran guards straight into the open sword or even plopped into the next pit.PcX360PS3

30 years of Prince of Persia – Movement wonder and time player

We take a look back at the history of Prince of Persia.

Jak and Daxter
Naughty Dogs action platformer Jak and Daxter undoubtedly made its mark on the Playstation 2. With a lot of humor, lovable characters and a noticeable gameplay evolution within the three offshoots, the franchise blossomed into one of the console's flagship products. Especially the Open World, which has come more into focus from Jak 2: Renegade, could benefit additionally on the Playstation 5 thanks to shorter loading times and more hardware power.

However, the chances of a possible resurgence are extremely slim. After all, the current lineup with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is already a game with a similar premise in the making. On the other hand, Naughty Dog has evolved since the venerable PS2 days – after the Uncharted series and the two parts of The Last of Us, the studio is increasingly working on the really big AAA blockbusters, not necessarily on the insider tips or hobby games. After all: In May 2020 rumors came over a possible remake of Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy for the launch of the PS5. However, there was nothing to do with them for the moment.

In a similar context, successors to Sly Cooper, Resistance or PaRappa The Rapper also appeared. As is well known, nothing is impossible, but these sequels are currently rather unlikely.

Banjo kazooie
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy showed how well new editions of well-known games of skill can work. The remake sold 2.5 million copies worldwide within the first three months of its release. Is that a good omen for a new banjo kazooie?

The last time Rare's jumping combo appeared in the Xbox 360 offshoot Nuts & Bolts (German subtitle: screw locker) was in 2008, but it didn't quite meet the expectations of the community. Even the guest appearance as a DLC bonus for Nintendo's in 2018 published switch beating Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was not really satisfying.

Come with us on a journey back in time to 1998, when Rare was still busy developing for Nintendo and an unusual duo of a bear and a bird embarked on a great adventure. Banjo-Kazooie in a retro special!

Developer Rare, on the other hand, went wild in the online sea of Thieves piracy. A sequel or even a reboot of the original? Seems to be a long way off right now. Still, we are hopeful that Banjo-Kazooie could return in the foreseeable future. After all, Microsoft has recently noticeably upgraded its line-up of studios and urgently needs some distinctive exclusive games for the next console cycle.

Left 4 Dead
Regardless of whether it is Playstation 5 or Xbox Series X – online gaming plays an absolutely vital role on both platforms. A new offshoot of Valve's zombie shooter Left 4 Dead would be more than suitable! In any case, we would like to see fierce battles with boomers, hunters and undead hordes again.

10 years Left 4 Dead 2: Sweeter the zombies never moaned …

Blood, guts and hordes of zombies: Ten years after its appearance, Left 4 Dead 2 is still the best co-op game ever.

The third part was released in 2009 for PC and Xbox 360; a successor is currently not planned. For the moment, Valve clearly rejected the rumors that cropped up again and again. The Half-Life makers are working on an unofficial successor, but there will probably not be a classic third part. It's actually a shame, because even if World War Z recently built on the proven concept, the original remains unmatched.

TimeSplitters
Another shooter franchise that fans rave about to this day is TimeSplitters – developed by the British studio Free Radical Design at the time. In particular, the second part, published in 2002 for Playstation 2, Xbox and Nintendo Gamecube, became a long-running multiplayer hit. In addition to the strong action gameplay, which was still unusual for consoles at the time, it impressed with its multitude of multiplayer modes. Seasoned with the unmistakable graphic style, TimeSplitters might not have been a mass phenomenon, but it was definitely a favorite.

Nowadays, a reboot or a "spiritual successor" would be conceivable, especially through the possibilities of online sales as mid-price or even as Free2Play titles. Since TimeSplitters was not a real box office hit 18 years ago, a possible new edition would only appeal to the curious and players of the original. In any case, we would look forward to a comeback of the shooter insider tip.

Knights of the Old Republic
Fans of the RPG series Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic had to be strong in the past. The last solo offshoot of the series was launched in 2004. The third, canceled part should have been an MMO-RPG anyway and was eventually replaced by the online sequel Star Wars: The Old Republic and the associated expansions.

Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic – Remake will not be made at EA

If the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is actually in development, EA probably has nothing to do with it.

But what we're missing is a purely solo adventure in LucasArt's well-known science fiction universe! And even if there probably won't be a sequel anytime soon, at least a new edition of Knights of the Old Republic could become a reality in the foreseeable future. As early as January 2020, rumors about a remake increased, before the renowned game journalist Jason Schreier stated that the remake was in the works, but probably was not developed at the original Studio Bioware. While this has not yet been confirmed, there is at least "a new hope".

No One Lives Forever
Okay, that wish will probably never come true. But we still put No One Lives Forever (NOLF for short) on this list. Cate Archer's agent adventures in 2000 and 2002 were bursting with charm, wit and clever gameplay ideas. NOLF, developed by the US studio Monolith Productions, was the counterpart to the relevant James Bond films and other typical action adventures.

No One Lives Forever: Re-release of the cult shooter is still under discussion

The topic of a new release of the cult shooter No One Lives Forever is not off the table yet.

Unfortunately, it currently looks difficult as if a new NOLF will fall victim to the licensing confusion of the games business: Monolith is now part of Warner Bros. Interactive, but the distribution rights to the title are held by Fox Interactive, which in turn belongs to Vivendi. Activision is also said to have some unknown rights to the title.

Developer Nightdive Studios expressed great interest in a remake of the classic. This was also confirmed by managing director Stephen Kick, but emphasized that the "Rights are scattered to the wind". . The relationship status is currently on "It's complicated."

Something is missing!
Of course, we could list countless other brands at this point such as Legacy of Kain, X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter or MDK. We are curious to see which franchises will actually make their comeback in the coming years and which will stay hidden somewhere in the archives for the long term.

The fact that a new generation of consoles can also be a great opportunity is shown by the aforementioned Fable announcement for Xbox Series X. And who knows, maybe we will be able to play some of the titles listed here very soon.
