Epic Games' Kim Liberi explains that thanks to new technology in Unreal Engine 5, we are finally experiencing movie-quality games. Next Gen like PS5 and Xbox Series X make this possible.

It sounds like a dream, but Epic Games seems to be convinced of it: thanks to Unreal Engine 5 New computer games should have a graphic quality like large cinema films.

Games with movie graphics

The Unreal Engine 5 uses a new technology called Nanite. According to Epics Kim Liberi, this allows developers to develop assets for games that are of film quality. "It was a lifelong dream of mine that real-time computer graphics, and games in particular, could be as believable and realistic as a movie," he says. "The next generation of graphics and computing power will not only make games more immersive, but also enable completely new game concepts that can leverage fully dynamic environments and lighting, greatly improved physics, smarter AI, and richer multiplayer experiences."

Unreal Engine 5 enables developers to incorporate assets with billions of polygons into the engine. Nanite then scales these assets in real time and adjusts the performance without any loss of quality.

"The film industry has been experimenting with the Unreal engine for pre-visualization and filming for many years, and then last year Jon Favreau and LucasFilm made the leap to use Unreal to create final pixels for visual effects in the camera for The Mandalorian to produce, "explains Kim Liberi. "Still, there is still the challenge that the film industry is creating almost infinitely complex assets, and for real-time content, we need simplified meshes and normal maps. With Nanite, a new breakthrough technology in Unreal Engine 5, we have removed the barriers. Developers can now create environments with full quality footage, and the engine does all the heavy lifting, resulting in truly photo-realistic results. "

Ultimately, Nanite is said to lead to better graphics in games and a more effective workflow in development. This makes the Unreal Engine 5 not only interesting for large studios. Indies will also be able to develop games in the future that always look better. The Unreal Engine 5 will be released in 2021. It is not yet clear when we will see the first games with it.
