Construction guide for your base in the different biomes in Valheim. We provide you with tips for the correct structure and more. The biomes of Valheim are the secret star of the tenth world: With every step into unknown land, the sense of adventure grows and the anticipation for new crafting material increases. But what if the pockets full of iron and the fires at home are still far away? The metals of Valheim are the greatest indicator of your strength, but cannot be teleported. Brave Vikings load their prey onto a ship and sail back, but what if you already know that a sea serpent will ambush you on the way?

Reading tip: Valheim Cheats for God Mode and much more

The answer is simple: you are building a home, far from home! In this guide, we'll tell you how to build a rock-solid base in each biome, where you can turn your metal into bars – and the bars into teleportable armor. Of course, it is quite time-consuming to ship the necessary craft materials to your advanced base, but we are not building outposts in this article – we are constructing fully-fledged bases, including all amenities. And who knows? Maybe you like your new fortress so much that you relocate your main location?

With hammer and chisel: construction tips for explorers

Before we focus on any specific biome, let's cover some important, basic tips that apply to any setting in Valheim. It doesn't matter whether you just want to build a waystation, an outpost or a full base.

Our most important tip for building in a hostile environment: wooden iron posts are your friend! The things carry gigantic constructions and provide strong foundations - even at a height of one hundred meters.

Abandoned structures are your friend. Valheim is guaranteed to generate structures such as huts, towers and ruins on flat ground. As in real life, a good location is critical to the success of your base – and leaving the pickaxe in your backpack will save you a lot of work. You can level out any unevenness with the hoe after the ruin has been dismantled.

Develops existing stone structures. Judge for yourself: Is the dilapidated stone tower big enough to build a craft station in it? Does it have several floors that you can easily connect with stairs? Is the area free of the Vegvisir stones that show you the location of the next boss? If the answer to all of these questions is yes, then it makes sense to just expand the structure rather than pull up something new.

Stone is ideal, wood is also possible. If you are building in a hostile environment, you always prefer a stone structure to a wooden structure. If you find wooden buildings more beautiful or simply not yet able to build with stone, that's not a big deal either. Wooden structures on a stone foundation represent a good compromise, because in this way you secure the most sensitive part of your building. Ideally, you are already building in a way that makes it completely impossible for the enemy to even reach your fortress. That brings us straight to the next point:

Build so that you are (almost) invulnerable. Building a good fortress makes it easier for you to stay in dangerous biomes – an invulnerable base lets you sleep in peace even if an invasion is about to break into your base. In general, you can do this by building either very high or on your own island. In our guide you will learn how to build an invulnerable base in each biome.

Wooden iron posts are your strongest tool. With the help of wooden iron posts you can yourself high above the ground

Build foundations – in other words, get the coveted blue color in construction mode, which indicates that your fortress is secure. In addition, floor slabs that have been reinforced with one or more wooden iron posts are considered rock subsoil. This means that you can build a coal pile, a smelter and a campfire even at a height of two hundred meters … If you build on wooden iron posts. Seriously, the posts are so strong that they open up completely new horizons for skilled builders. But see for yourself.

If you want to build your base in the grassland, as is usual in the normal course of the game, our guide to base construction: Layout tips for an impregnable fortress well advised. Even after defeating several bosses, the environment never becomes so dangerous that you have to pull out particularly strong stops. To explain: As soon as you defeat Eikthyr, regular gray dwarves join the roaming graylings. If you bring down the ancient one, even one or two skeletons wander through the beginner's forest at night. But none of this is a reason to unpack heavy artillery. To be on the safe side, we will repeat the most important tips from our anti-invasion construction guide in short form.

At your starting point, you just have to pay attention to the usual anti-invasion properties: a moat, a good wall and a few pointed stakes usually ward off everything.

Watchtowers enable you to react quickly and precisely to all attacks, from land or in the air. Possible invasions can also be fended off perfectly.

A moat prevents melee opponents from reaching your stockade wall. The deeper the wall, the safer you are from large enemies who cause siege damage. If you manage to fill your trench with water, you can even bind smaller opponents in the swimming animation and turn them off completely.

Pointed stakes are cheap and do solid damage to your enemy. From time to time opponents are even thrown back by the stab damage and interrupted in their attack animation.

The most important thing in your starting base is a solid portal gallery that will help you reach your biome bases. Remember to clearly label the portals.

All in all, we simply recommend that you set up your base in a pretty location for the grassland. Nothing can be really dangerous for you here and you can even cope with the invasion events with our tips. Relax, build solid defenses, and breed some pigs. Plants that can only be found in grasslands, such as mushrooms and raspberries, are easy to harvest. You don't really have to exert yourself during your grassland stay. See your grassland base as a pleasant retreat that always offers a safe haven even in difficult Valheim times.

Sea Fortress: The Dark Forest

When we set up our first base in the dark forest, it gets more interesting: In addition to gray dwarfs, skeletons and gray dwarf shamans, you will also encounter gray dwarf berserkers and, above all, trolls. The last two types of enemy have one thing in common: They cause siege damage. Where berserkers can cause serious damage to your palisades, trolls push even strong wooden fortresses over, like houses of cards. So how do you protect yourself from the anger of the eight-meter-tall monsters? There are essentially two major approaches to this.

Our stilt house will then be reminiscent of a wooden drilling rig. You should build the base platform far out to sea so that enemies like the troll stay away in the background.

Uses stone structures. If you build with stone, it will take trolls significantly longer to demolish your citadel. If you can't put your own stone walls yet, you can do it by repairing an existing stone building with wooden components. The dark forest is bursting with ruins – use them! Even a large stone block in your log cabin will prevent a troll club from sweeping your entire camp. You don't stop trolls completely, even with stone buildings, but you slow them down so much that you can start a counterattack with fire arrows. If your base is still there afterwards, you have been successful.

Use islands and build stilt houses. In our opinion, the best strategy is to look for one of the many small islands near the coast and build a stilt house on it. This has two advantages: On the one hand, you are so far away from all enemies that you normally have peace and quiet. On the other hand, you can easily retreat to your island fortress when it gets tough and you are safe there from berserkers and trolls – if you build far enough on the sea that the trolls cannot use their size to simply wade over to you . Since this method works so well, we will now explain the procedure for your own dark forest oil rig.

You begin by scouting the coastal area. What you are looking for is a small island that is not too close to the mainland. When you have found your dream island, you start with the preparation: Stack your stakes as shown in the picture, at least two, more likely three lengths high. The reason for this is, on the one hand, that you want to stay far out of the reach of your enemies. In Valheim, the AI often applies "out of sight, out of mind", so that your stilt house should soar high into the sky. On the other hand, you build your fortress in the surf – and anyone who has ever experienced the swell in a dark forest storm knows how high the waves can hit. That is not bad in itself, because the sea will not tear down your construction … It is still extremely annoying to have constantly wet feet because you have not built high enough.

The completed forest fortress is connected to the mainland by a long bridge. Trolls usually beat up the bridge so that you are safe on your artificial island. If in doubt, tear down the bridge.

We use the mighty iron posts because we want a strong foundation and an internal forge. If you are just at the beginning of the Bronze Age and still want to build an island fortress, you can do the whole thing with normal wooden beams. Just remember that you can only construct your indoor forge with ironwood posts. As soon as your basic framework is in place, the building construction, which in the end is your responsibility. Remember that in addition to a blacksmith and craft room, you will also need to set up a fireplace, bed, fermenter and portal. Depending on the width of your building base, we therefore recommend moving at least one or two additional floors. A solid support structure, however, enables you to build a pretty roof. Bridges the ocean base to the mainland. If the placement of the bridge supports is difficult for you, build individual wooden platforms on the support legs and try to place the beams precisely under the bridge into the sea.

We pulled the smelting chimney through the floor of the first floor so that we could get a smoky dark forest forge. Don't worry: the smoke is far enough away not to suffocate you.

If a troll now attacks you, you run along your self-built bridge and slam your front door behind you. Normally the troll will now attack the bridge and thus cut itself off the way to your fortress. If that doesn't happen and the troll uses your bridge to stroll in the direction of your fortress, you unpack your hammer and dismantle the bridge by hand. As a result, the troll either stops angrily at the edge of the bridge or falls into the water and wanders around there, confused. Either way, problem solved. Congratulations on your Dark Forest Fortress Island!

When it comes to a longer stay in the swamp, the possibilities are rather limited: you can straighten the land and dig water, but the opponents are hardly impressed by such measures: Draugr do not cause siege damage, but attack at high frequency . Meanwhile, the slimes are able to jump over poorly placed palisades and trenches. With their caustic slime they also eat their way through anything that is not a stone or that is fundamentally insensitive to damage. Even the tried and tested pointed posts are only of limited help against the nasty slimes. What now?

An extensive tree house is the best option in the swamp so that you can go about your trade safely and in peace. Connects the individual levels with wooden bridges.

Stilt houses also work in the swamp, but the whole thing is associated with a higher risk. Your bridge does not work well against draugrs and slimes, all of which are small enough to gain entry easily. If you are unlucky enough to get Surtlings, these wooden buildings can set fire to them and make your day a lot more hectic.

Tree houses represent the only, truly unassailable fortress variant in the swamp. The reason for this is that we only use the invulnerable giant trees for our top fortresses. Look for extremely large, thick tree trunks. If in doubt, test your tree with an ax: If you don't see any damage figures, you've found your new home. If you work with wooden iron posts, you can move all of your production off the ground, high up in the treetops of the swamp. The advantage of this is, on the one hand, that you usually live so far away from your enemies that they completely ignore you. On the other hand, even long-range enemies who become aware of you will turn indecisive circles around your tree trunk. The reason for this is that ranged fighters can easily discover your character in Valheim, but still have to get within range of their weapon.

An open craft area offers you a good view, an attack platform and creates a little endor atmosphere. Those who prefer to take out triple coverage should close the craft level.

In order to construct your dream tree house, you first look for an indestructible tree, as mentioned above. When you have found the right tree, you first set up a "scaffolding", with the help of which you can begin the actual construction process. In Valheim, scaffolding is a temporary wooden structure that allows you to work in inaccessible places. It is best to first set up a staircase that you arrange around the tree trunk – ideally, you use the spiral staircase afterwards to enter your house.

Tip: Players who want to work without ironwood posts push the stairs sideways "into the tree"; the same applies to your intermediate platforms. This not only circumvents Valheim's stability system, but also transforms all components that have been inserted into the trunk into foundations.

With a secure scaffolding, it is easy to build. Accordingly, you now start with the floor of your tree house, which ideally consists of wooden iron posts and wooden panels. In order to preserve the look of a certain cannibal bear colony from the forest moon Endor, we build round tree houses. To do this, place the wooden iron posts around the construction trunk in the shape of a spoke, so that the trunk forms the hub of your "bicycle tire". It's best to use our pictures as a reference if you don't know what we mean by that. As soon as the spokes are in place, you connect everything with wooden floor panels.

You can achieve the round look by arranging your wooden iron posts in the shape of a spoke. The practical: Thanks to the wooden iron posts, you can easily light a fire in your tree house.

Tip: Make sure that the plates are centered in the wooden iron posts, because they will inevitably overlap and we don't want your tree house to look like a failed boy scout's summer project.

Now pull up the walls of your house and put the roof on top. So that the smoke from your fire can escape, you simply place the center of your round roof on four wooden pillars. And yes, you can also set a campfire above the ground – thanks to the mighty wooden iron post. Due to your tree-bound construction, floor two or three may have to struggle with branches that clip ugly through the walls of your fortress. We therefore recommend connecting your tree house to other round tree-top fortresses with a bridge. Put up some green torches and voila: the creepy but extremely safe swamp tree house is ready.

When the time comes to add a fully-fledged mountain base to your transportation network, things get a little more complicated. The mountain is usually not near the water and even if you did, you would end up running out of the biome to only enter a distant fortress. If we want to build our base directly in the mountains, stilt houses are of no use to us either, because the wolves also attack wooden iron posts, golems distribute siege damage and dragons find us even if we build extremely high. What now? In order to avoid all these problems, we orientate ourselves on the people of the dealer Haldor: Dwarves are not civil engineering experts, but we also work as mine workers in the mountains of Valheim!

The game also generates towers on mountain slopes - which always stand on level ground! We chose this place because of the location and the generated platform.

A rock fortress is driven directly into the mountain. To do this, we either excavate a mountain flank or look for a natural rock crevice, which we widen if necessary.

Existing stone towers are extremely important when choosing a location, because there is one thing that is lacking in the mountains: flat subsoil. The ruins generated by the game solve this problem skillfully, because you are guaranteed to find flat land around the towers! Whether you restore the ruins and include them in your building project is up to you. In this case, however, we recommend leveling everything and building it from scratch.

Build in stone in the mountains. On the one hand, this has the reason that even very well hidden rock fortresses still have to fend off one or the other dragon attack. On the other hand, you will collect so much stone just through your shaft work that it would be nonsensical to drag huge amounts of wood into the mountains when another, stronger building material is available in large quantities.

The finished mountain fortress is built into the crevice and uses the natural platform to house an outer courtyard, including a forge. You can of course also set up your forge inside.

In order to construct our dwarf citadel correctly, you first look for a suitable mountain flank or a tower that has been generated in a prominent place. If both come together, all the better – abandoned towers that were generated in a steep wall let you build practically impregnable fortresses, because the enemy does not even get to your front door.

Tip: By the way, you can use a little trick to climb every mountain flank yourself: sprint towards the wall with Shift and hit your "jump" button every second. Your Viking suddenly develops downright uncanny free climbing skills.

We recommend starting your fortress construction with the generous laying of stone foundations. Golems and wolves do a lot of structural damage and you don't want your base to collapse in a chain reaction because you've saved on the foundation. Make sure to build into the mountain, because the less "real" components you use, the less it can be attacked during a siege. Every wall that you replace with raw rock is, in the truest sense of the word, invulnerable. It is up to you whether you move your entire production inside or build an external factory yard as in our example – but it is safer to place everything inside your fortress.

Inside the rock fortress, we opted for a volcano-like dwarf look. Because we built the fortress directly into the mountain, we have more space inside than you think from the outside.

Your rock fortress is perfect if you can only reach it via a portal at the end. Remember: With enough stamina you can climb any wall yourself, no matter how steep it may be. On top of that, with our variant you don't have to use ironwood posts, so that you can transport the lion's share of your building material directly via the portal. And if you are annoyed that a bare rock wall in the base looks ugly, do not worry: with a little fire atmosphere and wall decorations, the mighty rock fortress can also become a cozy place.

You yourself can climb any mountain slope with the "sprint and jump" technique - but this fortress is impregnable for your enemies. Now and then fetch a kite from the sky and you have your peace.

When you finally dare to venture into the plains, a very special hell awaits you: the goblins you will be dealing with here are not only fast and tough, but also extremely strong. Shamans give the melee fighters and archers a magical shield, while the goblin berserkers are the most dangerous siege enemies that the early access version of Valheim has in store for you. If you have your base completely secured and all the gates locked, you still have to deal with the flying death kits – and even after a nerf that lowered the damage to the monsters, they are still excellent at flattening you with one hit . Your defense strategy must look accordingly.

Our magician tower allows you a heavenly peaceful stay in the plains. You are absolutely invulnerable in your super pile dwelling and you can also run a death kito-free farm.

A stilt house on an island only works with goblins and even then you usually have so many enemies to deal with that one of them will likely find its way onto your bridge.

A farm is imperative in the Ebenbecause flax and barley can only be grown here. This also opens up a pile dwellings.

A magician tower solves two of your problems: On the one hand, you are so far removed from all enemies that even death kits will no longer reach your forge. You can also set up a farm at his feet that is specially secured against death kits. Here we go!

Our mage tower assumes that you find a level biome in which the gigantic menhirs were spawned: If you see a huge, upright stone, you are correct. The search can take a while, but the Mage Tower is so impregnable that it is worth your patience. You start by building a spiral staircase around the menhir (as before in the swamp). Twist the stairs to the top of the huge rock.

Tip: Bring a lot of iron because the wooden iron posts come into their own here

Grab your tried and tested iron posts and start building a pile foundation on the rock. To do this, you put a post in the menhir, put a wooden base plate on it and place the next post on the four corners of the base plate. Now remove the center post.

Important: Repeat the whole thing with all four corners of each subsequent floor slab! Also, place iron posts around the floor panels. Although this is extremely expensive, it allows you to build a complete forge and a kitchen with a fireplace at a height of one hundred meters. So a little effort is worthwhile here in the long term. You also want to equip your dizzying high magician tower with as many foundation plates as possible.

The death kito net consists of two beams that are erected on top of each other and slightly overhanging. The insects do not recognize the beams as a coherent structure and stick to the overhang.

Build your supported foundation as wide as possible, because you need a lot of space. Then pull up a few walls – in this case it doesn't matter whether you use stone or wood, because while you are in your base, you will never meet a single enemy anyway. Put two more floors on top of the first room to make room for a craft chamber, bedroom, and portal room. Put a roof on it and you have a base that is one of the safest in Valheim!

Goblins can't use your extremely long spiral staircase. The AI can't handle the necessary movements and will destroy the stairs rather than use them properly. In this case, simply replace the steps.

Death kits do not fly so high that they will ever reach you.

Let's get to your fortress farm. We strongly recommend setting up the farm right at the foot of your magician's tower, because then you can immediately retreat to your fortress located high up in an emergency. To do this, plow the earth right around your stairs and plant your flax and your barley. Make sure that you do not place the plants under the overhang of your fortress, otherwise the field is not considered to be "under the open sky". Now secure your farm with thick stone walls and pointed stakes – ideally you even draw a moat around your wall.

Your fortress farm is located at the foot of the huge menhir and is protected by a wall and the death kito net. Be careful not to place your barley and flax in the shade of the main building.

One problem, however, remains: death kits always find a way over your wall. Even if you add large overhanging floors to the top of its wall, the death kit AI will circle the fortress and find its way over the wall. You can fix the whole thing by building a grid structure, as you can see in our screenshots. The practical death kit grid consists of vertical stakes that are connected to two horizontal beams, one of which is moved forward by one beam thickness. Difficult to explain, but luckily we have screenshots in which we can show you the defenses. The death kits do not register the open overhang construction as a coherent obstacle and in this way stick to the beams. So you know how to build the perfect Valheim fortress for every biome! Sobald die Nebellande bevölkert werden, melden wir uns mit der zweiten Variante der Baumhaus-Festung – dann allerdings im Wookie- anstatt im Ewok-Style. Viel Spaß beim Bauen!
