So far, not many players use a virtual reality headset. On the one hand, this is due to the rather high price of the devices and the high hardware requirements, on the other hand, there are still comparatively few really good games for which the acquisition of the technology would be worthwhile. From Half-Life: Alyx, many players expected the longed-for killer app. But is virtual reality really experiencing the deserved upswing through Alyx?

According to a Valve survey conducted in March, the latest installment in the hugely popular Half-Life series has motivated gamers to get a VR headset. According to Road to VR almost a million headsets were connected to Steam last month. This is the highest increase in VR usage in a single month ever.

So has VR finally finally reached the end customer? That is still questionable. Despite the fact that Half-Life: Alyx has caused a significant increase in the use of VR, only about 2% of all Steam users still actually have a corresponding device. In addition, it is very likely that the numbers recorded are not exclusively newly sold headsets, because the hardware survey conducted by Valve only recorded whether a headset was connected at all.

In addition, you should always keep in mind that all these statistics are only estimates, not definitive numbers. So reality can be very different, and the way Valve collects and publishes data is a little vague.
