The release of Warcraft 3: Reforged is coming soon, from January 29 we can enjoy the new edition of the real-time strategy classic from 2002 in modern splendor. If you want to shorten the waiting time until then, you could, for example, look at the freshly published article by the Blizzard developers with the title "Stories from the Forge: Redesigning the Night Elves" look at.

The name says it all: In the extensive blog post you will find out how much effort the developers have made to make the Allianz people, but also all the other races, creatures and figures shine in new splendor:

"First of all, our concept artists look for inspiration in world history, the graphics and models from World of Warcraft and the original concept drawings of Warcraft III. Based on this extensive research, they create several concepts that are presented to the entire art team The team looks for the best aspects of each concept: the pose of Concept A, the eyebrows of B, the shoulder pads of C and the toes of D.If everyone agrees on the details, a 3D model is created. The art team checks every model from every angle, taking into account size, color, recognizability and silhouette. Each model goes through several of these test rounds. Then there is the animation phase, where the movements of the fabrics and body parts are perfected in order to appear realistic and correspond to the personality of the character. Every model goes through the entire process, regardless of whether it is Prince Arthas or a normal cactus. And we have a lot of new models. Over 700 to be precise. "

When redesigning the night elf units, it was important to the developers "Capturing the essence of the night elves: nature is reflected both thematically and functionally in every aspect. Wisp bends the branches and roots of the ancients and with many night elf units, such as the Dryad, the elves and the beings of the forest literally become one . "

Illidan (demon hunter)

Illidan Sturmgrimm's classic devil tattoos, with which he channeled his demonic powers, were designed a little more complex and his character model gets some additional muscle power to lift the later wings and horns.

Cenarius (Guardian of the Grove)

The wooden claw hand of the redesigned keeper is much more detailed and eye-catching. In the competitive game you can either summon this multiplayer model or the mighty Cenarius personally.

Like the original, the new Cenarius is wrapped in ivy, and the keeper of the competitive game comes with several customizable outfits in a unique look. He is still a few millennia away from his 10,000 birthday, so his antlers and ivy have not yet fully developed.

Tyrande Wisperwind (Moon Priestess)

When redesigning Tyrande's model, the developers decided to give Ash'alah armor to make it stand out from the ordinary saber-toothed cats – after all, she is the high priestess's right paw.

Maiev Shadowsong (Guardian)

Maiev's redesigned model differs significantly from her sister in multiplayer. Although she wears a chakram, she is missing Maiev's characteristic blade-reinforced cloak and the crescent-shaped decoration on the back.

Night elf archer

Archers are a central element of the night elf army. Together with a moon priestess, her damage is remarkable. Later in the game, they become even more powerful on the back of their hippogryphs. Whether you look at concept art Warcraft II, Bow in Wow or research looks at Improved Sheets (the latter was the ultimate source of inspiration) – a lot of research goes into developing each unit. The bow of the archers in Warcraft III: Reforged has a somewhat more traditional shape and tapers more sharply at the connection points with the tendon.

Night Elves Dryad

Dryads are excellent for tracking fleeing units and incapacitating their enemies with their creeping poison. While the original dryad still looked like it was carrying half a tree with it due to the large number of leaves on its spear, the spear in the redesigned dryad steps into the background enough to make the details of the entire unit shine. The developers have also adjusted their colors to make them more like a deer. The character Lunara (from Heroes of the Storm) was definitely an inspiration here – their deer-like colors made them appear more alive compared to the gray-violet coloring of the original. The latter looked almost undead and didn't quite fit the spirited and scary forest creatures.

Night Elf Klauendruide

In bear form, the Claw Druid is a powerful advanced melee unit. This druid has always worn fur and other ornamentation of the bear into which he can transform. The redesigned unit, however, lifts the robe more clearly from the druid and his face appears more like that of a stoic night elf than that of an already half-transformed bear. But what about the claws? Are they gloves or part of the druid? Lead producer Pete Stilwell suggests that an answer to this question can be found in the single player campaign: In their attempts to become one with nature, the druids have grown their nails a little more uninhibited than ordinary night elves, but given the rather disappointing ones In the end, they have started to tie powerful claws.

Mountain giants

These massive melee units can take incredible amounts of damage from their attackers. The improved mountain giant has clearly defined crystals on its shoulders and the placement of the grass cover is now less like a tunic and more like a moss-covered stone. When developing the version below, the developers looked at several concept drawings and combined the best aspects of each work.
