As a big fan of JRPGs, I’ve been following Edge of Eternity for a while. The French developers at Midgar Studios want to enrich the feeling of Japanese role-playing games from the 90s with modern graphics and fresh gameplay elements. In addition, they were able to bring a composer legend on board with Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger, Xenoblade Chronicles). That sounded good. The Kickstarter campaign was successful. After several years of internal development, an early access phase followed, which finally culminated in the final PC launch in June. Ports for Playstation and Xbox are to follow at the end of the year. In the meantime, I’ve been able to play for almost ten hours in Edge of Eternity and get a good idea of whether the developers can achieve their goal. Spoiler: I’m torn.

Edge of Eternity: War and Beauty in Heryon

There is war in Heryon. Armed with swords and magic, the inhabitants of the world are fighting an almost hopeless battle against the Archelites. The mysterious invaders are technologically far superior and do not shy away from even unleashing a biological weapon on Heryon with the decomposition, which turns their victims into deformed deformities.

The mother of the soldier Daryon is also affected by the disease. He and his sister Selene set out to find an antidote to the decomposition. With the two of them I cross beautiful picturesque places that shine with countless details, atmospheric lighting and dynamic day, night and weather changes. I really like the imaginative design with the meter-high mushrooms, floating rock formations and magical crystal formations.

And those who do not like to travel on foot with their crew, use teleporters for fast travel or swing on the back of a feline Nekaruh, who can also smell and dig up buried treasures (and enemies). Another plus point in the world: There is something to discover about the raid. Chests, for example, locations with hex-based puzzles or raw materials for the craft system. These can be used to manufacture equipment, weapons and consumables, among other things. Alternatively, most items are also available from the dealer, if you have the necessary change, of course.

Through (the mostly very generic) quests and fights, I earn experience points for my squad, which later no longer only consists of Daryon and Selene, rise in level and become stronger. But I can also level the weapons of my warriors. They each have their own “talent trees”, the slots of which are activated by crystals of different colors. The crystals not only grant the weapon bearer various passive bonuses, they also provide him with special abilities and spells that he can then use in combat.

Exciting: As soon as we decide on a direction on the talent tree, we can no longer fill the sockets in the other directions with crystals. So we have to decide which bases we want to use and which crystals we want to use. It is a shame, however, that the loot is mainly limited to crystals, consumables, money and resources. Up until now, new weapons and armor were only available through traders, crafting and – in one case – a quest. In addition, it is stupid that although we can marvel at the new, stylishly designed weapons on the characters, the armor does not affect the look of our heroes.

Edge of Eternity: Rundenbasiertes ATB-System

Don’t worry, the random battles of old JRPGs don’t exist in Edge of Eternity. In the open game world you can see where enemies are roaming around, so that in most cases you can walk around them if you want. If it comes to a fight, the game changes to a turn-based active-time battle system, which you may be familiar with from some Final Fantasy games. Each participant in the fight has an action bar that fills up continuously. You can only attack, use abilities, move around or use objects with a full action bar. The same goes for your opponents. Since the fighting pauses as soon as it is your turn, you can plan your next step in peace.

The fights take place directly in the game world, which is now divided into several hex fields. These are important for weapon and action ranges, but also for your positional play, to flank units or land a critical hit in the rear of an enemy. Oh, and if there’s a ballista or healing crystal nearby, you can run over there and use it to your advantage.

Some actions such as spells require preparation time, which is also shown on the action bar. However, the enemy can interrupt this magic process through targeted attacks. It is also possible to disappear from the targeted hex during preparation.
Personally, I’ve really enjoyed the fights so far. Experienced role-players should set the level of difficulty to difficult, normal seems a bit too easy to me. I would also like to see a greater variety of enemy types. Too often I have to cut through variants of known villains.

What is great, however, is that you can adjust the level of difficulty at any time, and that you can even influence the scaling of the opponents, for example whether the level of the opponent should be based on your character level or whether you want to forego any type of scaling.

Edge of Eternity: Lots of rough edges

It doesn’t sound too bad so far, does it? In fact, I am currently very impressed by the beautiful game world, even if it is structured quite linearly. Unfortunately, Edge of Eternity shows in many other places that the title was developed by a rather small studio. If the models of the most important characters are still quite detailed, the quality of the secondary characters drops noticeably. The same can be said about the English speakers who are used in special moments; some speakers do a good job, others make it sound like the game director has just imitated an old man.

Edge of Eternity: The characters' facial expressions seem unnatural and involuntarily funny, especially in the story sequences.

But the crude facial expressions and animations of the characters tear me out of the atmosphere again and again, especially in the dialogue scenes and story sequences. Part of it reminded me of Mass Effect: Andromeda, just not quite as elaborate. It doesn’t help that there are a lot of such scenes waiting for us gamers in the tutorial area that feel strangely wrong.
Unfortunately, there are also corners and edges in other areas of the game. Sometimes I noticed untranslated texts, sometimes the performance dropped noticeably for a short time, and the developers should also lend a hand again with the menus, so that, for example, when shopping and manufacturing, objects can be better compared with the current clothes.

Edge of Eternity: How good is the story so far?

Edge of Eternity: The speaking flower Flavio did not fall on the mouth.

The starting point is exciting and the mother’s disintegration gives it an emotional anchor. At the beginning, however, I had the feeling that the developers wanted too much too quickly. Emotional drama here, surprising twist there, death of comrades there. And all represented by characters that look funny and move unnaturally. The quest stories have also been quite run-of-the-mill so far. But there are also highlights. I recently met a chattering flower that didn’t fall on my mouth. More of that!
