Film adaptations of computer games are by no means a novelty and now go back far more than 25 years. The results that have been presented to us since then have been of very different quality. So it's no surprise that the announcement, Final Fantasy 14 (buy now for € 7.90) wanting to implement it as a real TV series met with a lot of reservations within the community. A certain skepticism may well be healthy, but this time it may not be necessary, because the world of Final Fantasy 14 is particularly suitable for such a series.

Final Fantasy 14: The series – what is known so far

The studio announced on June 27, 2019 Sony Pictures TV for the first time, on one real TV series for Final Fantasy 14 to work and promised "to welcome and embody all the elements that have made myth such an endlessly moving phenomenon. " Also hivemindwho recently did an excellent job realizing the Witcher books as a Netflix series are also part of the group. There have been a few since the first announcement updates and so we know that the script for the series has already been completed and that we are currently looking for a director for the project.

For more information, an interview that IGN provided a few months ago with <a href = "https://www.ign.com/articles/2019/10/19/why-ffxiv-is-getting-a-live-action- final-fantasy-tv-series-adaptation-over-ff7 "title ="Dinesh Shamdasani"target =" _ blank ">Dinesh Shamdasani, one of the co – founders of hivemind, led. Accordingly, when designing the series, great importance was attached to implementing all the elements that also made the game series so successful. The storyline is said to be in the world of Final Fantasy 14, but it should tell its own story and establish a new main character. Nevertheless, some faces familiar from the game will also appear. The first scene is said to show Cid on an airship before a new main character is introduced to the plot. Shamdasani emphasizes, however, that you always try to follow the MMO template so that it may even be possible to respond to the events of new extensions in later seasons.

All in all, the series is still at a very early stage of its development and it will probably take months (if not years) before we even see a first trailer.

Eorzea as a series – does that work at all?

In the past, film implementations of computer games have not always been covered with fame, and the Final Fantasy franchise, for example, also had "The powers in you"Already a notorious slip-up from 2001. But Final Fantasy 14 in particular could work much better and be the ideal template for a series that also offers enough material for several seasons. I don't need to list how complex and The storyline of FF14 with all its different characters, storylines and locations is complex.

It is really remarkable how consistently and respectfully the established game world is treated by the developers themselves. Every new update is concerned with expanding Eorzea a little bit and not throwing out elements that have become beloved by thoughtless storytwists. New action elements and characters almost always fit seamlessly into what is already known, creating a coherent and comprehensible overall picture. This may not sound particularly worth mentioning, but it is anything but a matter of course, especially in the MMO area.

You always have the feeling that you are traveling through such a large world in FF14 that it is only touched superficially in the course of the main scenario and you can only guess which big and small stories still happen outside of the given field of vision. It is also helpful that the developers have refrained from describing the game world down to the last detail and instead limited themselves to a few continents. This makes it easy for the series' authors to make their contribution to the world without disturbing the big picture.

Last but not least, the enormous level of awareness of the franchise should also be mentioned, so that the producers probably asked themselves less if you want to implement a Final Fantasy as a series, but rather the which it should ultimately be. Thanks to its many crossovers with the other parts, FF14 now serves as something like the central point of the series and was probably just for that reason. The engineer Cid, the chocoboswho are cuddly Mogrys. Ifrit and Garuda – Anyone who knows Final Fantasy will immediately feel at home in Erozea, even if they may have never played FF14 before.

All in all, it should not be up to the template which quality the series will ultimately achieve. The challenge should now be to implement the given elements in such a way that connoisseurs of the game world will enjoy it just as much as anyone who is rather unfamiliar with the template – last but not least, it was this challenge that, for example, the Warcraft film, despite it, does existing qualities failed.

The Final Fantasy TV series: what could we expect?

Of course, one can also speculate about which story we will ultimately see in the series. It would be obvious to implement the action that took place before the seventh disaster in version 1.x and which probably only a few of us have witnessed. However, the statement speaks against this Shamdasanisthat you want to develop your own story and establish new characters.

Instead, a story would be possible that takes place in a country that has not yet been mentioned and that also struggles with Garlear oppression. This would allow the creators to spin their own storyline, building bridges to the events in Final Fantasy 14 (like new additions). New wild tribes and their primae, previously unknown enemies and threats and maybe even new perspectives on the world and its history could be on top of it. A skilful interplay between series and MMO would give both media a boost and create a whole new story experience.

Until we see a first trailer, this will only remain speculation. So now it is time to exercise patience and wait for further information.

Of course we are also looking forward to your comments. Do you have high hopes for this project or are you rather skeptical about the whole thing? Which story elements would you like and which characters or races would you like to see as a real implementation?
